Title: Launch I.E. Assembly JET

What’s the best part about life at GM?

The benefits and flexibility provided for me as a working mom.

What does my typical day look like?

I commence my day reviewing my emails and updating my calendar schedule. There are usually several meetings throughout the day where we assess equipment or process proposals, evaluate current conditions on the floor, and identify improvement opportunities. We audit several aspects of production requirements, including GMS principles that include standards for Safety, People, Quality, and Responsiveness.

What’s been my most exciting project to date?

I am currently working on the launch team for the new CSS Diesel Engine. This has been a great opportunity for me to participate in the design and implementation of the assembly line from start to finish. It has exposed me to challenges that have grown my knowledge base and understanding of purchasing and design systems within General Motors.

What’s the most unexpected skill I’ve gained at General Motors?

Seven years ago I became a member of our Joint Ergonomics Technician Team. I became responsible to evaluate conditions in the entire plant for ergonomic conditions. I never expected to have my skill base take a turn in this direction after 14 years of my career. It has become the most awarding part of my job. I realized I have a strong passion for keeping our workers safe and returning them home safely. My eyes became tuned for seeing risky conditions and identifying potential solutions.

What opportunities at General Motors have boosted my career growth?

I started my career straight out of college simply doing time studies for vehicle assembly operations. Over the years I have been able to work in simulations, layouts, process flow, material presentation methods, assembly tooling, and ergonomics. These dynamic job responsibilities have made my expertise grow over the years. I am looking forward to even more opportunities in the near future.
