GM is seeking Electrode Integration Engineer to join Chemistry Platform and Electrode Integration team. This candidate will work on the strategic direction and technology roadmap to design and develop electrode processes solutions and capabilities that achieves product performance goals by understanding the design space, and systematically working through design trade-offs to fabricate cathode electrode. This candidate will manage electrode integration projects to achieve design requirements set by the electrode design engineer, including safety requirement. The Integration Engineer will utilize the electrode Process of Engineering (POE) and the Analysis, Development and Validation (ADV) plan.

In this position you will be a fully-qualified contributor who has thorough knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the department. You will possess a broad technical knowledge, training and understanding combined with creative and independent thinking and conceptual ability to related work performed within their department. Promotes GM's values and makes customer-focused decisions.

This position requires sound technical knowledge and expertise related to the functional area of responsibility. You will need prior experience and/or knowledge of mechanical, instrumentation, electronics, testing/driving and fabrication. Translates business objectives to actionable work for the work group. Supports leading new processes and methods in line with departmental goals.

  • Responsible for meeting the electrode performance by achieving optimal integration of electrode design requirement and manufacturing process capabilities.

  • Lead optimization of electrode requirements (as necessary) with electrode design engineer and material supply base. 

  • Will contribute directly to innovation and technology road map

  • Work with highly technical cross functional team who are dedicated to Global Electrification and Sustainability.

  • Assist process engineers in optimizing processes that enables the production of next generation cell designs

  • Design and run well-designed experiments based on DOE methodologies on coin cells, pouch cells and other test vehicles

  • Test cells, analyze and summarize performance data, and use various electrochemical and materials analysis techniques to determine degradation mechanisms

  • Perform FMEA and root cause analysis when necessary to achieve design and product goals

  • Create and execute on project plans and drive projects to completion on schedule

  • Deliver final product, data driven analyses on schedule and effectively communicate the results to various stakeholders

  • Coordinate with equipment engineering team to develop new flexible automated manufacturing line for scale up electrode fabrication

Additional Description

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrochemistry, Material Science, and Chemical Engineering or equivalent Engineering degree​

  • 8+ years integration experience with battery cell structure, thermal, safety, electrical

  • Technical knowledge and experience related to Lithium-Ion Battery technology, cell materials and components, such a cathode, anode, separator, electrolyte or testing, development, simulation, or systems engineering.

  • Prior experience and/or knowledge of electrode synthesis and design including but not limited to different material chemistries such as NCM, NCMA, LFP, LFMP, LMNO, graphite, Si, SiOx, LTO and other chemistries.

  • Demonstrated System Integration Problem Solving

  • Prior experience in modeling, laboratory, validation, hardware development

  • Specific knowledge of engineering mechanics, heat transfer principles and thermodynamics, sensing, physics

  • Understanding of engineering theory of mechanical and electrical interfaces and their relationship to chemical reactivity; Lithium-Ion Battery

  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and ability in relevant engineering disciplines (e.g. Mechanical Interfaces, Boundary Conditions, Test Development, Materials, Manufacturing processes, Lithium ion chemistry)

  • Design For Six Sigma, Statistical Process Control, Reliability, Validation Planning

  • Demonstrate excellent level of analytical ability, communication and interpersonal skills required to build relationships with team members and customers to solve problems and resolve issues.

  • Demonstrates initiative by reaching beyond work assigned to improve output and/or help others

  • Strong understanding of battery cells, battery component, chemistry, material properties,

  • Proven ability in project management skills and ability to teach others

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Travel to suppliers and manufacturing facilities as needed

  • Knowledge of Lithium-Ion battery cell design and performance, analysis and testing

Preferred Skills:

  • Master’s Degree in Electrochemistry, Material Science, and Chemical Engineering or equivalent Engineering degree

  • 10+ years integration experience with battery cell structure, thermal, safety, electrical
