GM Motorsports is looking for outstanding talent with the passion to bring performance to the racetrack every week.  Continuing our winning tradition in racing requires that we never lose focus on innovation and being bold in our application of engineering and technology to build triumphant race cars.  GM Motorsports has recently opened a Charlotte Technical Center that will bring together sophisticated motorsports engineering technologies with engineers from GM, GM NASCAR Key Partner teams, and new hires.  GM Motorsports is focused on the concept of One Team, where the technology and people that build GM’s award-winning cars on the road work alongside the GM Motorsports team to win on the racetrack.  We are looking for aerodynamics engineers that have a passion for motorsports and enjoy solving complex problems in a very competitive environment.

The Motorsports Aerodynamics Engineer will join a multi-disciplined team of engineers and technicians responsible for testing, developing, and optimizing the aerodynamic performance of a complete race vehicle for NASCAR race events.  This activity will be focused on working with all GM Key Partner teams to ensure they are racing the highest performing vehicle possible.  Interested in joining our growing team with some work flexibility?   • Estimate drag, lift and other aerodynamic results

  • Interface and collaborate with NASCAR Teams and GM engineering, specifically the virtual design, development, and validation groups

  • Provide direction and concrete data to GM race teams to improve weekend performance

  • Support full car and subsystem models for use in detailed aerodynamic tests

  • Modeling and evaluation of aeromap response surfaces for use in vehicle simulations and driver in the loop simulators

  • Planning and execution of wind tunnel tests

  • Perform correlational analysis of CFD and wind tunnel test results

  • Organize test results into concise, presentable reports for proper decision making and implementation

  • Work closely with other aerodynamics engineers, Performance engineers, design engineers, and race team staff to improve the performance of the racecar and implement aerodynamic refinements

Additional Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related subject with coursework in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics

  • Experience with computer tools, 3D CAD files, CAE methods and Experimental Data

  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization as needed

  • Emerging partnership and teamwork skills and ability to learn from and share knowledge with co-workers in a fast-paced environment

  • Knowledge of experimental aerodynamics standard methodologies

  • Basic knowledge of scripting and programming

  • Experience with data acquisition systems, data collection, and data processing 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of professional aerodynamic research experience – NASCAR experience preferred

  • Masters or PhD in mechanical or aerospace/aeronautical engineering

  • Familiarity with aerodynamic and wind tunnel testing, measurement techniques and data systems

  • Experience with the architecture and performance of NASCAR race vehicles

  • Knowledge of NASCAR race series regulations
