Hybrid work position: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. In the USA, this is an employee who lives 100 miles or less from their designated, primary worksite.
This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week.
As an Interior CAE Engineer, you will perform FEA simulations of instrument panel systems including stiffness, modal, impact, and airbag deployments. You will use Optistruct and Dyna toolsets, along with advanced variation and optimization software, to assess and lead designs.
You are responsible for the creation and documentation of modeling plans to engineering team and initiation of new processes and tools. Responsible to create and execute Finite Element Analysis (FEA) plans for assigned projects. Participate in the creation of assigned subsystem Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models . Motivate CAE suppliers and internal resources to meet program milestones and deliverables. Perform and oversee resources for virtual assessment of designs and compare results to performance requirements. Initiate design solutions to resolve any performance issues with mass & cost efficiency.
Conduct analytical finite element simulations to evaluate vehicle interior instrument panel, steering wheel, and airbag systems. Primary activities are: Passenger Airbag deployments and 201L Head Impact assessments, though Instrument Panel structural analysis along with Squeak and Rattle studies are also done. Primary tools: Ansys Dyna and Altair Optistruct.
Work with Safety Department to support their crashworthiness simulations.
Capable of handling multiple projects (e.g. multiple vehicles and designs) without direct supervision.
Work with test labs, as well as the vehicle proving grounds, to define tests which maximize learnings from limited hardware. Follow up post-test on correlation of CAE to test results and potential learnings and improvements.
Perform variation and optimization studies using various advanced CAE tools and methods to increase the robustness of designs as well as identify best ways to improve performance.
Leverage off-shore resources to support workload, planning tasks and timing such that deadlines and report dates are met.
Balance Program work with additional assignments (e.g. standard work updates, method development, process automation projects, etc.).
Produces concise management summaries that meet the needs of Directors and Chief Engineers.
2+ years of experience in LS-Dyna and/or Optistruct finite element simulations, and associated Pre and Post processors.
Strong understanding of plastic materials structural performance at ambient, cold, and hot temperature.
Demonstrated ability to work in teams, balance theory with practical limitations, and identify and execute work at a level of detail consistent with the need for accuracy and the time available.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Highly developed interpersonal skills to work independently as well as effectively with others.
Ability to summarize and present work to cross functional teams.
Proficient with Microsoft Office products (PowerPoint, Excel, Word)
5+ years of experience in LS-Dyna and/or Optistruct finite element simulations.
2+ years airbag deployment, crashworthiness, and/or head impact (201L) CAE experience.
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical (ME) (required)
Master of Science or PhD – Mechanical Engineering (preferred)
