At General Motors and as part of the Global Propulsion Systems Manufacturing Engineering organization, you will have the opportunity to work in cross functional, inclusive, and high performing teams working on making the future of mobility a reality. In the Battery Cell Process group, we thrive on developing, deploying, and innovating technology in our manufacturing processes. The battery cell process engineer will provide extensive support to the product design and manufacturing implementation efforts focusing on the assembly packaging process, formation end-of-line process. The position will require leading the development of battery cell manufacturing process strategies along with collaborating with Ultium personnel and GM Global ME leadership on present and future battery cell generations. This an outstanding opportunity to work on pioneering technology as part of the electrification of transport.

This position is not eligible for ISP, ITAP or localizations.  

Key responsibilities:

  • Technical expert for the developing battery cell processes including equipment planning and approval of cell equipment specifications
  • Work with equipment suppliers on design, build, validation and start-up of cell process equipment and automation
  • Optimization of cell manufacturing line layout for assembly and formation end of line processes
  • Support construction teams with specifications on building and facility requirements for assembly and formation end of line processes
  • Support implementation of GM safety specifications and equipment safety reviews
  • Develop strategies for implementation of next generation battery cell technology
  • Interface with leadership and support development of battery cell manufacturing strategies
  • Support start-up and ramp up of manufacturing plants
  • Development and implementation of Bill of Process and Bill of Equipment
  • Continuously improve safety, quality, responsiveness, and cost
  • Apply creativity and initiative
  • Develop and maintain relationships with Ultium partners and support the Ultium joint venture plant

Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering discipline preferred or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of industry experience in Battery Cells Manufacturing Assembly Packaging, Formation End-of-Line Process, or Factory Automation for Battery Cell processes and/or 2+ years of experience in Manufacturing Engineering, Process Development, Project Execution, or similar area
  • Experience applying process and equipment specifications and working developing manufacturing systems
  • Experience with installation, debug, and start-up of high-volume manufacturing equipment
  • Solid understanding of lean manufacturing

Location:

  • Primary location Warren, MI
  • Approximately 35% travel to manufacturing plants

Additional Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Advance Product Quality Planning (APQP) & PFMEA, Process Control Plans, BoP and BoE
  • Ability to understand pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical control drawings
  • Strong Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills (Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), DMAIC, Six Sigma, Red-X, etc.)
  • Demonstrated excellent level of communication and interpersonal skills required to build relationships with team members and customers
  • Understanding of mathematical statistics & statistical process control
  • High level of oral and written communication skills
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership
  • High level of computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient user of Unigraphics NX CAD/CAM/CAE software
  • Development and understanding of equipment specifications and experience working on manufacturing systems
  • Knowledge of Advance Product Quality Planning (APQP) & PFMEA, Process Control Plan, Bill of Process (BoP) and Bill of Equipment (BoE)
  • Basic knowledge of Global Powertrain Development Process (GPDP) and process of execution
  • Knowledge of GM M&E specifications including MARO
