The Tire Modeling team is integral to supplying tire models for the internal GM Motorsports program. The Tire Research and Development team support Motorsports needs by continuously improving and expanding model capability with the goal of increased understanding of tire performance. We are seeking a Tire Research & Development Engineer to work with the GM Motorsports organization developing and integrating tire models with simulation (real time and off-line), using any relevant data sources including flat track data, track test data, race event data. 

You will be responsible for capturing information from a variety of sources inside and outside GM, building and running empirical tire models, interpreting results for motorsports, attending motorsports testing across the country, collaborating with GM affiliated motorsports teams, and enabling the transfer of knowledge from motorsports to GM tire models.

This role offers a career in the fast-paced and challenging environment of tire testing and modeling at General Motors, with specific focus in Motorsports. You will work with innovative testing and analytical technologies to review tire F&M properties to virtually integrate tire performance to enable vehicle dynamics simulations for original equipment applications - running both in offline and real-time simulation environments.

Responsibilities include:

  • Review and qualify tire test data for tire modeling - this includes F&M Flat Trac data and Wheel Force Transducer data

  • Attend Wheel Force transducer track testing

  • Develop Methods to process tire test data including Flat Track and Wheel Force Transducer

  • Fit tire test data (F&M Flat Trac and WFT) to models with documented quality

  • Scale and synthesize models based on feedback from secondary data sources

  • Develop extensive enhancements to advance tire models, tools, and methods

  • Enable Tire technology transfer

  • Support integration of tire models with real-time simulation environments

  • Direct support of GM affiliated race teams with relevant tire information and simulation

  • Travel is required for this position. Tire testing occurs during the week - limited weekend travel may be required to arrive to the test facility.

  • Travel is domestic and expected 1-2x/month for 2-4days duration

Additional Description

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, CAE, or Software Engineering

  • 2-5 years of Mechanical, CAE, or Software engineering

  • Knowledge of tire model fitting routines from Flat-Trac and Wheel Force Transducer data

  • Detailed knowledge of tire design, development, and manufacturing processes

  • Experience and understanding of using Magic Formula tire models including synthesis based on tire construction changes

  • MATLAB or Python Coding experience

  • Pi Toolbox experience

  • Strong Project Management and Leadership skills

  • Outstanding interpersonal and relationship leadership skills to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization as needed

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with a team, as well as work independently

Preferred:

  • Master of Science or higher in Engineering

  • 8+ years of Mechanical, CAE, Software engineering experience

  • Experience in developing advanced tire models that include wear, friction, and thermal effects

  • Experience with implementing tire models in real-time simulation environments to support Driver-in-the-Loop project activities

  • Experience performing vehicle dynamics simulation

  • Motorsports experience is preferred
