Technology Fellow - Computer/Machine Vision

This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively.  The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.  Relocation may be provided. This position requires employee to be onsite 1-3x per week

We are seeking a strong technical leader demonstrating sustained performance, application and execution of their technical expertise who can drive the organization to be more efficient, innovative, and tuned to the leading edge technology options. Position drives tremendous thought leadership within GM on technical IT matters. Lead in advanced technologies and precise execution. Expected to demonstrate transfer of technology and expertise through mentoring, coaching, consulting and guiding. Holds themselves and others accountable for demonstrating GMs values and cultural behaviors. Demonstrated performance in area of expertise may include: Significant IT cost savings; Reduced program development cycle; Global application of product/process/ standards; Contribution to significant competitive advantage (e.g. first to market, low cost producer, unique product performance); Timely application of premier technology / methods to GM products and processes; Industry firsts that give GM a competitive advantage. Performs other related duties as assigned.

The Technical Fellow - Machine Vision Steers the course of action for their area of responsibility, providing direction to the organization regarding their critical technical area of expertise. Provides strategic direction regarding an organization’s products or services, developing functional or product strategies to support the overall business strategy. Advises senior leadership on process/products that have a readily recognizable short to mid-term impact on the organization. Designs and develops strategies, policies or original solutions to highly complex issues; often involving other functions, countries and/or regions. Often required to use high level communication skill to consult with internal and/or external parties, where interests are not aligned. As a non people leader technical expert, recognized expert on leading-edge or complex technologies, relevant disciplines, theories, techniques and /or concepts. Recommendations are expected and strongly considered by senior leadership. Expected to be the leader for the identified technology that is deemed as critical by the IT Leadership.


  • Lead research and development in applied Machine/Computer Vision algorithms/applications

  • Envision and develop an applied Machine Vision R&D agenda that (1) is consistent with GM overall strategy; (2) supports a large pipeline of opportunities for which these technologies are critical

  • Provide senior technical direction to working teams and inspire a larger community from across engineering working on applied Machine Vision

  • Publish, present, and contribute as a thought leader in the field of Machine Vision. Be a talent magnet for GM IT

  • Identify problems and opportunities and lead teams to research, architect, design and operationalize Machine Vision solutions

  • Develop/deploy/validate novel approaches to solve open-ended problems

  • Be part of the AI/ML Leadership team contributing to the overall strategy & roadmap considerations

  • Evangelize and inspire best practices across a large AI/ML engineering area as it pertains to the manufacturing space

  • Establish a culture that values diverse viewpoints while navigating complex decisions

  • Lead by example to build a culture of craftsmanship and innovation

  • Provide mentorship to our AI/ML talent across the team to help them grow technically and professionally

  • Assume hands-on leadership, especially when helping teams resolve complex problems

Additional Description

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field or related discipline (machine learning, computer science, applied mathematics, etc.), or equivalent research experience

  • 18+ years’ experience in research and design AI/ML solutions with significant focus on Machine Vision, with at least 10 of those years in a technical or scientific leadership position

  • Experience in designing and implementing large scale AI solutions

  • Experience in leading large-scale AI/ML development projects from concept to multiple releases in production

  • Familiarity with multiple machine learning frameworks (PyTorch, Tensorflow, Keras, etc.), and programming languages (C++, Python, MATLAB, Java, etc.)

  • Familiarity with multiple open source machine/computer vision libraries (OpenCV, SimpleCV, etc.)

  • Familiarity with OpenGL and OpenCL

  • Experience in cloud-based development and integration (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud)

  • Experience leading high-impact, cross-company initiatives

  • Established track record of excellence in relevant research areas

  • Excellent communication skills in presentation (both verbal and slides)

  • Very strong drive for continuous delivery of new and improved capabilities to production

The median level of salary compensation for this role is ($162,180 - $205,284)
