Description of the team at General Motors: 
Our Mainframe Innovation teams support the ongoing Mainframe Transformation program modernizing the GM mainframe application landscape and providing a horizontal shared application infrastructure and development service to the GM business.  The work provides an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment utilising a modern development toolkit with the introduction of Dev Ops tools and practices for the GM Mainframe. Team members will work with diverse business units right across General Motors.

GM Information Technology has successfully executed the largest IT transformation in the history of the automotive industry, fully insourcing what once was a nearly completely outsourced IT function.  Today GM IT is a dynamic and fast paced organization that designs, develops and maintains all IT infrastructure, applications and solutions enabling GM’s global operations. 

About these Innovations Roles:

GM is proud of having a strong track record of attracting, developing and retaining new IT talent. A comprehensive curriculum is tailored that introduces everyone the technology in a practical manner, provide significant hands-on exercises and embeds candidates directly into Innovation teams working on real-life challenges. We are now recruiting for our onsite training programs for 2023.

All roles include elements of analysis, design, programming, unit/integration testing, deployment, code debugging and job scheduling. Positions being sought across the GM Mainframe environment include a mix of Software Developer and Systems Programmers/Administrators. Following successful completion of our training programs, candidates will be equipped to perform multiple roles across the entire landscape.

All Mainframe positions work in a highly collaborative and increasingly Agile environment and will assume a key role in modernizing the GM Mainframe landscape. This is a role that would suit someone with solid IT skills, who is a strong team player with a positive, confident attitude and an eagerness to learn new skills and practices.

These are 11 month fixed term contracts with a comprehensive training program delivered through hands-on learning requiring candidates to be onsite at least 3 days per week.

Additional Expectations:

· Communicate effectively with a positive attitude

· Design and develop quality work in a timely manner

· Estimate, and design small increments of work

· Perform root cause analysis and quick prototypes

· Report status of assigned tasks consistently following Agile methodologies

· Promote improvements in mainframe software engineering practices such as test-driven development, continuous integration, and continuous delivery pipelines

Prospective candidates will need creativity, decision-making skills, a drive for results, the ability to develop peer relationships, a strong technical learning capability, excellent communication skills and a strong work ethic.

A bachelor’s degree in computer science (or related field) or an equivalent combination of education and recent, relevant work experience is required.

Technical skills for Software Development positions:

We are recruiting a Developer with a combination of skills in some (or all) of the following

· PL/1 / COBOL



· CA-7

· Endevor 

Additional Attributes/Skills (desirable but not essential)

· Agile, SCRUM methodologies

· Distributed SCM experience e.g. GIT

· Groovy/Java

Technical skills for Systems Programmer/Administrator positions:

  • Demonstrate willingness to learn Mainframe technologies in support of GM’s global products as a systems Administrator

  • Experienced in troubleshooting, researching, and resolving IT issues

  • Knowledge of z/OS system: installs, upgrades, de-installs, application of maintenance

Additional Attributes/Skills (desirable but not essential as training will be provided)

  • Standard z/OS tools: TSO/ISPF, JCL, VSAM Utilities, SDSF, SYSLOG, IEBCOPY, DFSMS, etc. 

  • Knowledge of SMP/E (commands, terminology, problem determination). 

  • z/OS terminology & concepts: Linklst, APFlist, Paging, Virtual storage, SMF
