General Purpose of Position

Plan and execute scientific research related to experimentally characterizing the performance of batteries, motors, and power electronics.  Develop and apply advanced measurement techniques to obtain fundamental data to validate high-fidelity numerical models.

Summary of Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead, plan, and execute research investigations related to experimentally characterizing, and improving, the thermal performance of batteries, motors, and power electronics
  • Perform cell-level battery thermal runaway measurements to gain fundamental understanding of initiation, vent gas characteristics, and heat release
  • Develop and apply novel measurement techniques to obtain fundamental data for model validation
  • Capture learnings in internal reports and external publications to disseminate knowledge and drive collaboration with external partners
  • Represent GM by being a leader in advanced measurements while maintaining knowledge and awareness of new developments
  • Generate innovative ideas, new project concepts, and demonstrate innovative thinking to solve technical problems
  • Generate and capture novel intellectual property in patents

Additional Description

Required Experience/Skills/Abilities:

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field, required
  • Strong background in experimental techniques to characterized heat transfer, multi-phase flows, and combustion
  • Excellent ability to analyze and interpret experimental data
  • Ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills

Highly Preferred:

  • 3+ years of post-doc experience (or equivalent) in advance measurement of heat transfer, multi-phase flows, and combustion
  • Fundamental knowledge of optically based advanced measurement techniques such as infrared, fluorescence, and schlieren imaging
  • Demonstrated experience with various gas analysis techniques such as FTIR, MS, and GC
