About GM Student Corps
GM Student Corps (GMSC) is a comprehensive, paid summer internship program for high school students in metro-Detroit, Flint and Pontiac that encompasses community service, life skills training, team building and mentoring. The program is centered around professional development to prepare students to tackle today’s challenges and become tomorrow’s leaders. Examples include painting in their school, renovating athletic facilities or community parks and implementing a neighborhood recycling program. In addition to service projects, the program exposes student interns to career, higher-education opportunities, and weekly life skills lessons to cover important topics such as money management and networking.
In this unique role, high school interns can make a great impact in the metro-Detroit community, while simultaneously preparing for their future.

Internship Focus Areas :
Life-skill Lessons : Hear from professionals on topics such as goal setting, problem solving, conflict resolution, communication, presentation skills, mental health, LinkedIn, resume writing, interview skills, social and professional behaviors, business attire, dining etiquette, financial planning and credit, identity theft, budgeting, investing
Mentorship : Receive mentorship from GM Retirees and college intern to help with your future career development and personal goals. High school interns will gain a circle of support and role models from their mentors.
Community service and volunteerism : High school interns will work on projects within their school and community throughout the Summer. During the projects, high school interns will gain skills in leadership, teamwork, problem solving and project management.
Post-high school planning : High school interns will learn more about education and career opportunities and create a plan for their future. Teams will speak with different educational institutions and learn about a variety of career paths.
Qualifications:
- Current high school student at one of the following schools: Cody High School, Eastpointe High School, Flint Southwestern Classical Academy, Hamtramck High School, Harper Woods High School, Henry Ford High School, Lincoln High School, Madison High School, Melvindale High School, Northwestern High School, Osborn High School, Pershing High School, Pontiac High School or River Rouge High School.
- Able to work 24 hours per week during the summer months
Desired Skills:
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to collaborate with varying levels of the organization as needed
- Written and verbal communication skills to communicate with your team, GM employees, and general public
- High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity
- Evidence of strong character with integrity, honesty, accountability, and trust
- Willing and able to participate in community improvement projects with teams, this could include, but is not limited to, yardwork, painting, and learning to utilize new tools in a safe manner
