Work Arrangement

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren (Coal Engineering Center) three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business].

The Role

In our pursuit to create a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion, GM’s Global Manufacturing Engineering team is challenging the limits on what is possible and embracing agility as it reimagines how to build the next generation of vehicles. Our diverse team of Manufacturing Engineers plays a crucial role in transforming our facilities through implementing the adoption of ground-breaking technologies.

What You’ll Do

The individual will lead a group of manufacturing engineers & technical experts that are engaged with our strategic suppliers to develop the manufacturing processes, design the equipment and tooling, validate and integrate the equipment, to ensure successful installation into our plants. The individual will be involved with setting the direction for our next generation of new manufacturing launches and will lead in executing the future electric vehicle build strategy.  Requirements would include effective utilization of personnel, material, machines, and facilities necessary for a flawless execution. The individual will be responsible for executing new and current standards for tooling, processing, and conveyance. Staffing and establishing the right people in right places will be critical to the team’s success.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leadership:
    • Develop, mentor, and coach a team of technical leads, specializing in manufacturing engineering tooling and equipment.
    • Foster a collaborative and results-oriented team environment.
    • Set clear goals, delegate tasks effectively, and hold your team accountable for achieving objectives.
  • Strategic Sourcing:
    • Develop and implement comprehensive sourcing strategies for manufacturing engineering commodities.
    • Lead the identification, qualification, and selection of reliable suppliers who meet stringent quality and cost requirements.
    • Manage supplier relationships, negotiating favorable contracts that ensure on-time delivery, optimal pricing, consistent quality, and system capabilities to ensure launches executed flawlessly and manufacturing facilities run at rate.
  • Commodity Management:
    • Oversee the procurement process for a designated group of manufacturing engineering commodities.
    • Conduct benchmarking reviews and analysis to identify cost-saving opportunities and potential workload and resource risks.
    • Analyze data to ensure all purchases align with budget constraints and company objectives.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with manufacturing engineering teams to understand their tooling needs and ensure on time delivery.
    • Partner with other departments, such as purchasing, to ensure smooth procurement processes.

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or a related field (an MBA may be preferred).
  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience in tooling and project management, with a focus on manufacturing engineering.
  • Technical experience in tooling and equipment design/build
  • Proven leadership experience in managing and developing a team.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and engineering principles.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical mind with a data-driven approach to problem-solving.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, common procurement software, and knowledge of MRP/ERP systems is a plus.

  • Thorough General Assembly operations knowledge with experience in Production, Maintenance, Manufacturing Engineering, and/or Quality including experience in multiple vehicle launches and lean initiative implementation
  • Driven individual with interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate employees and elicit work output
  • Experience in tool design, build, validation, and implementation follow-up
  • Strong analytical, computer, presentation, and problem solving skills
  • Strong Project Management skills to coordinate multiple activities simultaneously, set priorities, and manage deliverables
