Software Engineering Manager - Frontend, JavaScript, Website

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the GM Technical Center in Austin TX, three times per week, at minimum.

The Role  

As a Software Engineering Manager at General Motors you will guide development teams to raise the bar on user experience, on quality, and on performance. You'll be responsible for planning, coordinating, and clearly communicating project details to all stakeholders. Your role involves encouraging innovation within your teams, allowing them to explore new ideas and technologies.

You are expected to touch and contribute at every level of the technology stack. You will work with autonomous teams - all of whom love to get their hands dirty, develop new products and tools while keeping an eye on the overall system’s quality, performance, and scalability. 

What You'll Do  

  • Be both a highly technical, hands-on coder and effective people manager.  

  • Capable of hosting technical discussions, being a subject matter expert, and having strategic influence.  

  • Own and drive complex technical projects from the planning stage through execution.  

  • Create a team environment that encourages innovation and continuous learning.  

  • Balance the adoption of new technologies with practical, efficient solutions.  

  • Keep up with technological advancements and integrate them to enhance our engineering practices.  

  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other teams to align technological development with business goals and user needs.  

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)   

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience. 

  • 8+ years of experience working directly within engineering teams.

  • Software Engineering Leadership experience

  • Expert level knowledge in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build process, testing. 

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries. 

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)  

  • 10+ years of experience working directly within engineering teams. 

  • Master's Degree or higher

  • Experience building large scale software systems that are robust, reliable, and scalable.  

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers  

  • 2+ years of engineering team management experience  

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams
