Our diverse team of Manufacturing Engineers play a crucial role in transforming our facilities through the adoption of ground-breaking technologies. From raw sheet metal to final assembly, this team is reinventing the tools and processes that will enable GM to deliver on our promise to create an all-electric future.
In this role your responsibilities will be of a technical nature with decisions made within the limits of general practices, policies and standards. Your work will involve complex manufacturing problems including the need to root cause and follow issues to resolve.
Responsibilities:

Specify, configure, and operate equipment to test remote laser welding.
-
Manage the design and build of fixturing necessary for laboratory testing.
-
Obtain testing materials.
-
Develop joining processes to meet product performance requirements.
-
Create summary data reports of laboratory testing.
-
Identify and develop new technology projects to improve laser joining.
-
Work with Manufacturing Architects, Product and Launch Teams to identify potential applications for laser-based joining.
-
Execute Advanced Technology Development Projects including, define project scope; obtain approvals & project resources such as funding, space, equipment, and people; execute the project.

Complete validation of new technologies for production.

Ensure deliverables meet program timing.

Develop SOR for sourcing tooling systems.

Develop Pre-Production process and support pre-production build problem resolution.

Manage design, construction and installation of new laser joining systems in assembly plant or metal center.

Support new technology on-site through launch and production acceleration.

Support current production laser joining.
-
Follow up with production centers on Continuous Improvements items and participate in weld coordination meetings to keep informed of productions issues after SORP.

Develop lessons learned and continuous improvement items and incorporate into standards, procedures, processes and tool designs.

Keep current of developments regarding new technology. Review competitor’s advancements.
Additional Description
Required Qualifications:

Laser Welding experience
-
Fanuc robots experience
-
Understanding of weld analysis
-
Ability to use common hand tools and operate shop tools such as band saws and drill presses.

Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical/electrical mechanisms

Knowledge of sheet metal welding and joining processes
-
Strong interpersonal skills involving ability to work effectively cross-functionally and cross-culturally.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to set-up and use integrated manufacturing equipment.

Knowledgeable on setting up and operating laser optics.
-
Experience with cleaning and repair of laser optics.
-
Body shop launch and plant experience.
-
Experience in high level programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, C, C++, C#, Visual Basic, or Java.

Fundamental knowledge of material strength and fatigue principles.

Trouble shooting process and equipment issues.

Knowledge of CAD such as Solidworks, UG, NX, and Vis Mock-up.
Education:

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, or Welding Engineering (Preferred)

Advanced Degree in Engineering (Master’s or Ph.D.) ( Preferred)
