Engineering Manager - Battery Cells

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, Michigan three times per week, at minimum 

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to lead a dynamic team in the exciting area of Battery Cell engineering.  The Battery Cell EGM will lead a team responsible for hardware design and release focused on Lithium Ion Battery Cells of varying chemistries.  This will involve all areas of the battery cell from raw materials sourcing, cathodes, anodes, and electrolyte development, integration into the overall battery pack, evaluating cost reduction opportunities, and ensuring quality scalability.  This role is within our Global Electrification and Battery Systems (GEBS) organization, and we are creating groundbreaking battery technologies that provide industry leading performance for current and future GM Vehicles.  We are seeking highly motivated, forward thinking, innovative, high performing Leaders with a balance of strategic and tactical skills, to join this dynamic environment and help move us forward to achieve GM’s Zero, Zero, Zero mission. 

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Oversee all activities related to high voltage battery cell design and release

  • Work closely with our GM internal customers within the product engineering community including Advanced Engineering, Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center, Ultium Cells, and our Battery Assembly Plants

  • Lead the team in developing strategies for obtaining and characterizing raw materials

  • Lead a team that is responsible for cell component verification and validation internally, with suppliers or third party.

  • Lead a team that creates, designs and releases cell component designs

  • Provide leadership to ensure excellence in all aspects of GM and supplier engineering

  • Recruit, attract and hire top talent

  • Train, develop, coach, and mentor employees

  • Provide clear line of sight from organizational objectives to individual contributions; direct and prioritize work accordingly

  • Create an environment that fosters a positive and inclusive culture and encourages individuals to achieve their peak performance and engagement

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
  • 7 years of Engineering experience
  • Experience with the design or development of battery cells
  • Experience with Li Ion raw materials chemistry or electrochemistry
  • Knowledge with electrolyte, cathode, anode and separator materials or processing for Lithium-Ion battery
  • People Leader / Management experience
  • Engineering experience in all phases of product development from initiation to launch
  • Working knowledge of HV battery battery systems
  • Experience leading projects and people (directly or indirectly), with highly developed interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated organization and planning capability, with the ability to quickly identify and remove roadblocks and escalate as appropriate
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills, with proven capability to balance technical and business needs
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with ambiguity and support timely decision making
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments with a high level of composure and proven results

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Production execution experience working on battery cell design and manufacturing.
  • DFSS black belt
  • Masters in Engineering or Management
