Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant, Lansing, Michigan on a full-time basis.
The Role
As a Quality Engineer, you will be the single point contact and provider of daily support for your assigned components in the vehicle: You will be responsible to define problems, to develop quick containments, and conduct root cause analysis of issues. You will also be expected to be a partner to Product Engineering to help develop robust long-term solutions to many different issues within the vehicles. You will also prioritize safety, quality, and throughput issues identified by external vehicle customers (Warranty, Compass, etc.) or customers within the assembly plant (Global Customer Audit, Direct Run Rate, Ergonomics, etc.)
You will present the assembly plant and engineering staff with clear problem definition and technical guidance on complex problems, support launch of new products and manage supplier quality problems as they arise. You will document issues in the appropriate systems, Problem Resolution Tracking System (PRTS), Supplier Practical Problem Solving (SPPS), etc.
What You'll Do
- Act as the plant’s subject matter expert for your assigned vehicle commodities and develop quality standards and procedures for production operations.
- Manage multiple projects with broad scope and high degree of difficulty in a fast passed environment.
- Generate unique technical solutions utilizing 7 Diamonds Process, Red X, OpEx and other tools as applicable.
- Assist production in prevention of defect occurrence and recommend process changes.
- Work with Launch Team on new vehicle builds. Support Issue Resolution Team (IRT) Co-Chairs as necessary and transition commodities into the team as launch progresses into saleable builds.
- Work with suppliers and GM Supplier Quality Engineering to address SPPS issues and ensure robust countermeasures.
- Work with suppliers to develop inspection standards for parts and subassemblies.
- Write SPPS/PRTS to document issues identified by the plant team for your assigned components.
- Coordinate periodic system and process audits at the plant and at suppliers.
- Analyze Warranty data to identify and define problems.
- Work with / give direction to the GM supplier quality engineers.
- Work with VAA (Value Added Assemblers) to assure build quality.
- Work with Industrial Engineers to assure proper handling and assembly of components to be captured in standardized work.
- Support other team members as needed/directed and demonstrate excellent GM Behaviors.
- Make design or quality improvements to vehicle components to continuously improve the Global Customer Audit (GCA) score for the engineering and supplier quality bucket for a below target performance.
- Make design or quality improvements to vehicle components to continuously improve the DRR and meeting the greater than 89% for Built in Quality (BIQ4).
- Work Off-Shifts as required.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- 3+ years of combined experience in Engineering, Quality Engineering, Supplier Quality either at GM or at Supplier locations
- Bachelor's Degree
- Solid analytical/problem solving skills with capability to identify solutions to unusual and complex problems.
- Experience generating technical solutions utilizing 7 Diamonds, Red X, OpEx, Core Tools such as PFMEA, Control Plan, SPC Tools, laser scan, CMM, and others as applicable.
- Thorough understanding and capacity to effectively and safely operate in all areas of the plant production process.
- Effective communicator with solid oral and written presentation skills.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Advanced degree in Engineering.
- Red X Journeyman Certified.
- OpEx Greenbelt Certified.
- Proficiency with pulling prints, reading drawings, Vismock-up, Global Data Integration System (GDIS), Global Standard Inspection Process (GSIP), PRTS, Product Attribute Data Sheets (PADS), Gage Strategies.
- Experience in the design, release, and validation of automotive components, industrial products or consumer electronics.
- High level of independent judgment and decision.
- Experience with ISO/TS 16949:2010, APQP, PPAP, FMEA, PDCA, DMAIC, 8D, and problem-solving tools.
- Engineering Work Order (ECR)/Parts Release familiarity.
- Knowledge of PPAP requirements.
- Hands-on experience in a manufacturing and production environment.
- Understanding of GM GMS concepts.
