Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be onsite full-time, but the general expectation is that the employee will be onsite 3 days each week.

The Role:

We are looking for a highly qualified Lead Controls Specialist to shape and influence the evolution of Battery Control Systems products on our progressive Vehicle Mechatronics Embedded Controls (VMEC) team within the Software Defined Vehicle group (SDV). Battery Control Systems covers a broad spectrum of core functionality relating to energy storage, generation, and power management across our entire vehicle portfolio at General Motors.

What You'll Do:

Develop and Evolve Our Battery Control Systems Strategy:

  • Provide technical direction and leadership in all phases of controls development within the high voltage and low voltage domains, from discovery and planning through implementation and delivery

  • Guide the design and development of both existing and future products, as well as pinpoint strategic areas of improvement and innovation

  • Lead strategic product initiatives aligned with business needs and the competitive landscape

  • Oversee daily operations and implementation of advanced projects and products through collaboration with senior leaders, technical specialists, and key stakeholders

  • Provide leadership on large implementation projects as a cross-functional team lead, technical project manager, and/or consultant

  • Serve as single point contact for the communication of project status to leadership and escalate issues/roadblocks within the organization as necessary

  • Interface with product release teams, other technical specialists, and suppliers to develop optimal design solutions that meet requirements and business needs

  • Proactively identify warranty and performance improvement opportunities

  • Lead analysis and support resolution of critical vehicle, plant, or customer issues

  • Develop holistic controls strategies and architectures across high voltage and low voltage domains

Lead Technology Growth & Innovation:

  • Seek out, evaluate, and share state of the art tools, methods, battery control systems-related architectures and technologies to proactively deploy strategies and maximize opportunities

  • Maintain a benchmark of industry trends, provide knowledge sharing of emerging and competitive technologies

  • Provide influence and consultation into the early stages of battery systems related projects executed in other organizations such as R&D and Advanced Technology Work (ATW).

  • Work with external teams such as R&D, prognostics, big data analytics, manufacturing, and service to develop holistic high voltage and low voltage solutions expanding beyond embedded controls

  • Represent GM for external collaborations and conferences

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field

  • 10+ years of automotive engineering experience related to embedded controls, requirements development, and/or systems engineering

  • 3+ year of battery systems management experience (developing next-gen electrical power generation, distribution, management, and/or storage systems in automotive applications)

  • Exceptional collaboration and teamwork; demonstrated ability of leading cross-functional teams and influencing without direct authority

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with all levels of stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects and assignments with a high level of autonomy and accountability for results

  • Experience taking complex designs and systems from concept to production

  • Ability to create, expand upon, communicate, and execute organization’s advanced product roadmap and vision

  • Ability to develop consensus on best practices and validity of technical solutions

  • Proven organizational agility, influencing across hierarchies and driving change to achieve business results

  • Demonstrated ability to learn and adapt quickly to new domains and technologies

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Advanced degree in engineering or related field (Masters, PhD)

  • Record of innovation in systems, subsystems, or feature design: patents, awards, or publications

  • Experience with safety critical designs

  • Working knowledge of Scaled Agile Framework and Lean Portfolio Management

  • Experience executing projects within multiple phases of product development lifecycle

  • Experience with design of on-board diagnostics, prognostics, and big data analytics

  • Experience developing high voltage and low voltage controls related to power generation, conversion, storage, and distribution
