Description

GM Global Communications Team

The Communications team at General Motors focuses on impact and driving transformation through storytelling. It is home to the company’s Editorial & Content Strategy, Employee Engagement, Vehicle Brand, Corporate, Tech & Innovation, and International Communications teams. We are broad thinkers, team first, and subject matter experts in our field. We have a relentless focus on our mission and our customers. We collaborate across the business, lead with insights, and always ask how we can use communications to add value to the enterprise.

The Role

We are looking for a smart and strategic comms pro to lead Policy & Regulatory Communications for GM. You’ll be responsible for telling GM’s story in a way that advances our federal, state, and local public policy goals while protecting our reputation. The ideal candidate can deftly navigate the evolving political and regulatory landscape when it comes to ICE and electric vehicles, safety, autonomous driving, sustainability, trade, tax, and more. Influencing external and internal stakeholders is also key and you’ll be able to do that because you dive deep into an issue, develop a well-informed perspective, and zoom out as you bring other people along. You will be based in the DC office and will be a critical member of GM's communications team and work closely with the policy and legal teams.  Face time with your DC colleagues will be critical to your success.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Strategic Communications:  Craft and land our narratives to support GM’s public policy goals. Engage with industry associations, advocacy groups, and third parties.

  • Media Relations : Serve as GM’s spokesperson and engage with reporters, acting as a resource and ensuring they understand GM’s perspective.

  • Expert Counsel: Stay informed about the quickly evolving space, including relevant legislation, to help the company see around corners and anticipate risks. Confidently provide strategic counsel to the Public Policy team and other executives across GM.

  • Crisis Management : Lead the communications response for policy-related issues, including crisis management and rapid response.

  • Internal Collaboration : Maintain a close and trusted relationship with the public policy and legal teams.

  • People Management: Manage a team of policy and regulatory comms folks and ensure they are working on high-impact projects and are supported in growing their careers.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 12+ years working in communications and/or a related field. Ideally you have experience in the transportation industry, or an adjacent/highly-regulated industry.

  • Ability to proactively develop and drive a strategic communications plan, while also managing tough news cycles calmly and quickly. You have political acumen and stay one step ahead of the evolving political and regulatory landscape and quickly dive in when new issues arise.

  • Strong media relations experience with a network of national and regional contacts. You know how to shape stories and enjoy being out and about, getting to know reporters.

  • Outstanding written and media relations skills. You know that comms is much more than writing media statements. You’re creative and come up with new ways to engage on important issues.

  • Excellent judgment — you know how to plan ahead to avoid a crisis and when to escalate issues.

  • Ability to develop relationships and influence executives. Ideally you have experience navigating a large and complex organization.

  • Experience managing people and a desire to help others shine. You stay calm under pressure, move fast, and want to have fun along the way.

  • A company vehicle will be provided for this role with successful completion of a Motor Vehicle Report review.

[Additional Description]
