The Role:
General Motors of Canada Company– St. Catharines Propulsion Plant, is inviting applications from Environmental Engineering students for one (1) internship position . The intern will be assigned to the environmental department for the entire duration of sixteen (16) months .
Get the jump-start you need to get your career moving by gaining valuable professional experience within an automotive environment! The General Motors St. Catharines Propulsion Plant proudly manufactures the V8 engine, and Dual Clutch 8-Speed Transmission. A new product retool is occurring at the plant to build an electric drive unit. Once our products are ready for distribution, they are shipped to 4 different GM assembly plants world-wide.
The preferred candidate will be a self-motivated, confident Environmental Engineering student with strong problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills. The candidate will be required to work with minimal supervision and will be expected to continually improve the operation of his/her area and equipment. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license .
Key Responsibilities:

Support the implementation of plant sustainability initiatives and projects to meet GM Sustainability Commitments
-
Perform duties relating to air emissions, water quality, waste reduction/segregation, ecosystem enhancement, and other environmental aspects

Conduct plant environmental inspections and coordinate follow-up activities

Coordinate the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System
-
Coordinate site-wide departmental training on environmentally relevant ISO Task Instruction Sheets
-
Support daily shipments for Reg. 347 wastes under the RPRA Hazardous Waste Program
-
Support plant waste management program in compliance with applicable legislation and assist waste management contractor in resolving waste collection issues
-
Support zero waste to landfill activities and actively pursue alternatives for waste diversion/reduction.

Develop and coordinate plant sustainability community outreach activities and environmental awareness programs i.e. Wildlife Habitat Certification/ World Environment Day/ Earth Week/ Waste Reduction Week

Pursue new opportunities to increase environmental profile in the community

Support wastewater and storm water program in compliance with local by-laws and Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks Environmental Compliance Approvals (ECA).

Assist in analyzing monthly environmental performance metrics (Plan Do Check Act) and implement corrective actions to ensure compliance to target objectives.

Support environmental engineering and facility projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
-
Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree (3rd and 4th year students) in one of the following areas: Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainable Chemistry

Enrolled in a qualifying Ontario co‑operative education, or internship program

Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week in Canada, and 16-month term (4 consecutive semesters) starting May 2025

Willing to work in a plant environment

Have a valid Full Class G Ontario Driver’s Licence, or equivalent Canadian out-of-province licence

Outstanding leadership, interpersonal, and relationship management skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience

High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, takes initiative/self-directed
-
Possess strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills

Past experience in an industrial and/or manufacturing environment

Knowledge and understanding of ISO 14001 standard and environmental legislation
