Work Arrangement:

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to one of the following locations: Detroit, MI, Warren, MI or Mountain View, CA, you are expected to report to that location three times a week, at minimum.

Connectivity plays a pivotal role in using and advancing technology to offer unparalleled customer experience and develop revenue generating streams while acting as cornerstone to offer safety critical, hands-free driving solutions in line with General Motor’s strong safety culture. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Connectivity Module Hardware Engineer with a strong background in 5G, BT, Wi-Fi, BLE, UWB, and NFC technologies. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in hardware design, including system architecture, schematics capture, thermal analysis, and layout related to power circuitry, PCB flooring plan, RF front end, etc. to develop best in class Connectivity systems for General Motor’s vehicles.

The Role:

The Digital Key Hardware Design Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, function/performance validation, and issue resolution, of hardware components and systems that support digital key technologies across all GM vehicles and architectures. This role is tightly coupled to cross-functional teams, including vehicle integration, product managers, and system engineers, to create secure and reliable digital key solutions and assist in defining future technology roadmaps and resolution of issues that arise throughout development and production.

What You’ll do:

  • Hardware Design: Design, develop, and test digital key hardware systems, including microcontrollers, sensors, wireless communication modules (Bluetooth, NFC, UWB), and power management circuits.

  • Architecture Design: Create detailed system architecture, schematics, and layout to ensure system performance requirements.

  • System Integration: Collaborate with vehicle integration and packaging teams to integrate digital key hardware systems into the broader vehicle electrical architecture ensuring optimal performance considering design constraints and tradeoffs.

  • Prototyping & Testing: Develop and validate prototypes, conduct rigorous testing, and ensure hardware meets function and performance requirements.

  • Troubleshooting & Debugging: Provide troubleshooting support for hardware-related issues, performing root-cause analysis and implementing corrective actions.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams to ensure all program deliveries and dates are met for design releases, vehicle integration, DFMEAs, testing, defect resolution, and product launch.

  • Technology Development: Stay abreast with the latest advancements in digital key technology and hardware design, recommending and implementing improvements to processes and products.

  • Sourcing: Support selection and provide direction to CMs throughout development process.

  • Compliance & Standards: Ensure all hardware designs comply with relevant industry standards (e.g., ISO/IEC, CE, FCC) and regulatory requirements.

  • Communication: Report to senior leaders on project status, roadblocks, and escalation requests.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Expertise in BLE, UWB, and NFC technologies with a strong understanding of their application in vehicle digital key systems.

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent with extensive industry experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in technical domain design, and testing.

  • Strong proficiency in PCB design including schematics and layout using industry-standard tools (e.g., Altium, Eagle, KiCad).

  • Experience with hardware debugging tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and signal generators.

  • Experience with wireless connectivity protocols (e.g., BLE, NFC).

  • Familiarity with RF design and antenna systems.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to work through complex hardware and system issues.

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multiple disciplines. 

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • 15+ years of experience in hardware design and testing.

  • Master’s degree in engineering related field.

  • Knowledge of embedded systems design and microcontroller architectures (ARM, etc.).

  • Knowledge of automotive or access control systems.

Compensation: 

  • The expected base compensation for this role is: $181,200- $219,400 . Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position. 

  • Bonus Potential:   An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.
