Work Arrangement:
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Markham office three times per week, at minimum.
Introduction:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development, testing and implementation of embedded software for automotive control systems as part of the Vehicle Mechatronic Embedded Controls (VMEC) engineering department at General Motors Canada.
As Controls Developer or Software Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in designing and implementing controls and diagnostics algorithms for our vehicle dynamics and brake features. You will be an integral part of the requirements development process. You will have the opportunity to create advanced algorithm to deliver to the requirements with full complement of support from various experts, including scrum managers and system architects. You will work in partnership with test engineering to ensure highest quality.
Key Responsibilities:

Work in a scrum team to design and develop embedded software for vehicle chassis/brake control systems using C code and/or MATLAB Simulink while adhering to relevant best practices

Collaborate with Systems and Sub-Systems Engineers to define vehicle, sub-system, and behavioral requirements

Meet higher level physics-based requirements with efficient designs using modeling, simulation, data collection, and analysis

Define software unit tests, conduct software/hardware-in-the-loop and vehicle tests, and ensure thorough software testing

Support resolution of vehicle, plant, or customer issues related to controls, diagnostics and calibrations
-
Works cross-functionally with System Engineers, Software Engineers, Feature/Function Engineers, Calibrators, Scrum Manager and Scrum Leader to ensure robust design

Design test cases to ensure thorough software testing at unit, component and integrated level; execute model/code equivalency testing

Archive software components into repository databases and coordinate database retention efforts between controls and software teams

Travel as required to Michigan, U.S.A. Average travel is about 2 weeks a year
Required Qualifications:
-
Bachelor’s Degree Engineering (Mechatronics, Software, Electrical, Computer), Computer Science or related field.

Over 1 year of engineering experience related to embedded controls or diagnostics development
-
High level of proficiency in designing, developing and debugging physics-based C code
-
Experience with MATLAB Simulink modeling

Strong understanding of vehicle dynamics and motion control principles

Experience with software configuration management processes and tools (eg: Git Ecosystem)
-
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and drive results in a fast-paced environment with sometimes incomplete requirements
-
Excellent communication skills and a passion for innovation in automotive technology

Must be legally allowed to work in Canada and able to travel to the US

Must have a valid Canadian driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

MS or PhD in Engineering with focus on controls.

Experience in plant modeling and analysis tools, MIL, SIL, HIL Testing
-
Experience with testing methods and techniques (test-driven development and behavior-driven development (TDD and BDD))

Expertise in hand-code development of controls algorithms

CAN and LIN communication protocol knowledge

Experience working in an agile environment
