Description

Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role

This role offers the opportunity to work in a highly collaborative team focused on developing empirical battery models, physics-based battery models, and atomistic simulations. On this team you will develop empirical battery models or physics based models to provide electrochemical, thermal, mechanical, and safety related design direction for electric vehicle programs. This involves characterization & optimization of battery cell performance for vehicle range, charging capability, and battery aging effects.

The position requires deep technical knowledge in electrochemical mechanisms and the numerical methods used to model them. You should be proficient in the use of modeling tools such as COMSOL, MATLAB/SIMULINK, SABER or other electrochemical modeling tools. Solid understanding of battery systems, cells and multi-scale-multidimensional cell modeling is required, along with experience in multiple battery modeling techniques including equivalent circuit models, reduced order models, and physics based models.

What You'll Do

  • Create new electrochemical models for existing and future cells by: developing from first principles, blending existing techniques (empirical, theoretical, full and reduced order physics based, finite element, etc.), using existing modeling tools (COMSOL, Battery Design Studio, SABER, etc.)
  • Develop, maintain, and calibrate electrochemical models for existing and future battery chemistries using theoretical and empirical methods, validate models battery cell models with real cell data.
  • Document models, assumptions, intended usage and results.
  • Communicate model functionality, incorporate customer feedback, and work with outside teams to generate useful tools
  • Provide component-level and/or system-level design recommendations to Process and Design Responsible Engineers based on interpretation of analysis results
  • Connect with cross functional teams to extend battery models for pack architecture, cell validation, pack validation, cell software & controls development, pack software & controls development, and vehicle calibration
  • Independently lead capability growth projects to improve physics, develop new analyses for DFMEA loadcases, and automate/ reduce analysis time
  • Benchmarking and evaluation of new procedures, technology, or software tools
  • Contribute to the development of automation tools using Python, Java, or equivalent
  • Development of new and innovative Molecular Dynamics simulations related to battery cell performance and manufacturing
  • Utilize cutting edge AI/ML methods to automate data processing and model development.

[Additional Description]

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • BSE in Chemical, Electrochemical, Materials, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering

  • Experience in developing automation scripts in python, simulink, and integrate to other GVE toolsets

  • 5+ years of experience in electrochemical modeling and battery cell material characterization

  • Strong understanding of modeling processes and tools especially physics based degradation mechanisms and transport phenomena

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Advanced degree (MS or greater) in Chemical, Electrochemical, Materials, Computer Science, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering

  • Proven experience with development of battery cell designs
