Description

Interns will be responsible for developing and maintaining mobile and web applications as well as cloud infrastructure software.  They will be expected to learn and use sound, repeatable, industry best practices and following software development project methodology as they are coached by more senior developers.  The interns will work hands-on writing software or solutions based on detailed requirements and system specifications and assisting with troubleshooting and fixing software bugs. Development activities may include updating existing software or developing new software solutions to address a specific need or seek a particular business problem. This role will contribute to all development activities under appropriate methodologies and apply a repeatable, systematic, and quantifiable approach to the development process. This role will also work closely with more senior developers to ensure code alignment with design patterns/frameworks. 

During this internship, you will have an opportunity to work in our Software Engineering teams, working on features, infrastructure, and tackling bugs on our front-end applications and back-end infrastructure software.  At BrightDrop, we are working to bring customer solutions in the last mile of delivery.  That space is rapidly evolving, so things move and change quickly.  We are looking for interns that are curious, smart, work well in a team environment and are excited to help us move our products forward and drive changes and improvements to the ways customers approach the way they do business. 

Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in one of the following areas: Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Software Engineering

  • Must be graduating between December 2023- June 2025

  • Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week, and on-site 2-3 days per work in our Palo Alto, CA office

  • Project experience developing either web or mobile applications or a reasonably complex cloud-based application. 

  • Good understanding of Agile software practices 

Preferred Technical Skills:

  • Backend software development in one of the JVM languages Java/Scala/Kotlin + Spring Boot 

  • Strong CS fundamentals, including OO concepts, data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems 

  • Experience with at least one of the public cloud providers Azure, AWS, GCP 

  • Relational DBs, like Postgres, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle 

  • NoSQL databases like Cosmos DB, DynamoDB, Bigtable, HBase, Cassandra 

  • Hibernate or other ORM frameworks 

  • Docker, Kubernetes, Serverless, CloudFormation 

  • Experience with IoT stack is a big plus 

  • Git and source control management tools such as Bitbucket, GitHub 

Desired Skills:

  • Prior internship in software development 

  • Insatiable curiosity and desire to learn 

  • Project experience that demonstrates innovative thinking that is customer-centric 

  • Able to work both independently and as part of a team 

  • Outstanding interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with people inside and outside of the immediate working team 

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience 

  • Ability to learn from and share knowledge with team members in a fast-paced environment 

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity, takes initiative/self-directed 

  • Evidence of strong character with integrity, honesty, accountability, and trust

  • Experience implementing project management skills to work across multiple projects

This position has a planned start date of May/June 2023.

  • Hybrid : This position does not require an employee to be onsite full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.​

Student Stipend:

GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to each student selected for the 2023 Student Program.​
