About GM Legal Staff

As a member of the GM Legal Staff, Legal interns  will strive to be a role model for the Company by delivering high performance legal services with high integrity.  The GM Legal Staff’s objectives are to deliver timely, best-in-class business and advisory and legal services in close collaboration with business partners to accomplish their objectives while simultaneously protecting GM’s high standards of legal, ethical, and financial integrity. 

GM’s Preparation/Prosecution Management & Threats team provides general legal advice to technical and business teams on the development, delivery, sale, and operation of industry-leading technologies, provides instructions to outside counsel on prosecuting applications globally, manages GM’s global patent portfolio, and resolves patent-related disputes with external parties including managing litigation. 

Key practice areas include Corporate Compliance, Corporate Development, Product Litigation, Environmental & Safety, International Trade, Complex Litigation, Intellectual Property, IT Cyber & Privacy, and Real Estate.

About the Internship

The intern will support the IP Legal Staff in protecting GM’s industry-leading technologies related to automotive vehicles and other mobile devices.  This will include:

• Working closely with engineers to identify possible inventions and develop them into viable IP;

• Developing the global IP strategy together with the senior leadership team;

• Using analytics to evaluate GM’s patent portfolio and those of its competitors; and

• Implementing operational changes to achieve patent prosecution KPIs and to streamline the patenting process.

During the summer, interns will learn (i) how to apply patent law in a practical manner across a significant IP portfolio, (ii) best practices for managing outside counsel and interacting with internal clients, and (iii) methods for incorporating technology tools into GM’s patent prosecution practice.


Additional Description

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Pursuit of a Juris Doctorate (JD) is required
  • Must be in 1st or 2nd year of program (1L or 2L)
  • Eligible to be admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
  • Excellent writing, editing and written communication skills with proven ability to research, write, edit, and proofread communications.
  • Highly motivated, detail oriented and results driven.
  • Basic software coding experience.
  • Knowledge in key legal trends that impact the organization
  • Commitment to integrity and quality.
  • Demonstrated experience as a self-starter with excellent ability to organize resources and establish priorities.
  • Proven ability to establish rapport, both internally and externally, and create an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Professionalism and poise working with senior leaders and executives.
  • Familiarity with information technology including various business and/or legal specific software, Outlook, and digital means of communication.
  • Experience and comfort working in a fast-paced environment where decisions must be made and work done in real-time while planning for longer-lead assignments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong coding experience in a professional or educational setting
  • Experience with VBA or Python is a plus
  • Experience with applying data science or analytics
  • Previous legal support and/or engineering experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of automotive industry environment and business needs is preferred.

This role offers the following Work Appropriately strategies:

  • Remote: This position does not require employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work off-site on a permanent basis.

GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to each student selected for the 2023 Student Program.

The median level of the monthly salary compensation for this role is $4,700-$6,100, dependent upon class status and degree. Benefit options are not available for this role.
