The Public Policy team supports many facets of GM's automotive business.  The team is led by four departments which include External Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, International & Strategic Integration & Analysis.  All departments interact internally with business units and externally with state & federal policy makers.  Through positive partnerships, our team collaborates closely with regulators, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other automotive companies to define policies that collectively support our operations, customers, and communities.

Your primary responsibility will be to provide support for the Federal Affairs team based in Washington D.C. Typically, this involves pursuing independent projects while also working closely with one or more team members to support ongoing workload. During the summer, we expect the intern to be prepared to quickly gather and evaluate information related to their project(s), conduct independent research, and perform quantitative analysis. You will work under the direct supervision of an experienced employee, but encouraged to be a self-starter, work well independently, and demonstrate the skills and knowledge gained as part of your studies. At the end of the summer, you will present on your project(s) and findings to senior Public Policy staff.

Examples of future projects and work undertaken by previous interns include:

  • Inventory of key strategic and policy decisions affected by U.S. elections
  • Research on current & emerging technologies – the impact to General Motors and what Public Policy can do to influence these trends
  • Diversity & Inclusion – evaluating the intersection of social & policy issues
  • eDelivery – identify and explore local regulations and target cities for electrified vehicles
  • Development and evaluation of “what if” scenarios for automotive-sector greenhouse gas emissions in the context of U.S. commitments to the Paris Climate Treaty

Additional Description


  • Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in General Public Policy, Political Science, Public Relations, or related field of study
  • Must be graduating between December 2023 and August 2025
  • Demonstrates leadership in field of study, extra-curricular activities or service organizations
  • Able to work full-time - 40 hours per week during the summer months
  • Experience in spreadsheet-based analysis, brief written summaries, and presentations

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience

This role offers the following Work Appropriately strategies:

  • Remote: This position does not require employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work off-site on a permanent basis.

The median level of the monthly salary compensation for this role is $4,650 dependent upon class status and degree. Benefit options are not available for this role.

GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to each student selected for the 2023 Student Program.
