Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility onsite every other week.

The Advanced LiB Cell Technical Specialist requires sound technical knowledge and expertise related to Lithium Ion materials, chemistry and cell design, including next generation cathode, anode, and electrolyte formulations. You will need prior experience and/or knowledge of electrode synthesis and design including but not limited to NCMA, LFMP, SPAN, LMNO, Silicon/Silicon Oxide, Li Metal. Translating business and technical objectives to actionable work deriving novel concepts to optimize BEV/Electric Vehicle Propulsion Systems. Supports leading new processes and methods in line with departmental goals.

This Technical Specialist role is responsible for development and validation of advanced lithium ion battery solutions for electric vehicle applications. Work within a highly developed expert team concentrating on lithium battery materials, cell form factors, manufacturing, and quality. Work within a global battery function on new product solutions for future vehicle electrification customers. Collaborate within an advanced technology ecosystem at GM's new Battery Cell Innovation Center.   • Lead and deliver product development and evaluation; create novel LiB cell BOD, BOM.

  • Lead and deliver process development and evaluation, contribute to novel LiB cell BOP, BOE.

  • Define requirement development and specification creation; publish CTS.

  • Create and lead Advanced Technical Work (ATW).

  • Lead analysis, development and validation projects and process.

  • Derive and select Most Likely Scenario Cell with BOM Family Owners.

  • Work with Systems Engineering to allocate requirements to cell specifications and testing using Model-Based methods.

  • Work with Cell System and Module DREs to ensure interface and packaging compatibility.

  • Develop advanced cell concepts for GM New Products.

  • Work with Cell System and Module DRE to translate requirements into specifications.

  • Deliver robust solutions which demonstrate DFSS, OPEX, Optimization.

  • Work with System Safety to develop safety performance envelope.

  • Work with Supplier Quality to create advanced MFG quality strategy.

  • Work with QRD Engineering to create advanced product quality strategy.

  • Work with BSL, Research/Development and Materials Engineering to create and improve testing & diagnostics.

  • Lead and work with appropriate teams [GMRD, Materials, Universities, National Lab, ECS] to improve Cell Engineering Capability.

  • Utilize ATW, USABC, SAE, DoE and other funding as required.

  • Utilize &/or leverage modeling, simulation and analysis.

  • Support Cell Peer Reviews and the Cell Process of Engineering (PoE).

  • Leverage lessons learned from other programs and ensure compliance to Bill of Design (BOD).

  • Lead &/or support DFMEA, DRBFM, and DRBTR activities.

  • Write lessons learned and apply to standard work [BOD, BOM, BOP]

Additional Description


  • PhD Chemistry and/or Master Degree in Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical, Physics.

  • 5+ years of related engineering experience.

  • Electrochemistry with strong data analysis with proven and peer reviewed results; internal reports, publications, patent, conference proceedings, citations.

  • Experimental strategies with chemical formulation, emphasis on electrode active materials, electrolyte and separator.

  • Experience designing lithium ion battery cells or rechargeable energy storage systems.

  • Exposure to electrochemical and material level quantum modeling with supporting experiments.

  • Strong project management; ability to be self-directed; team-oriented.
