AI/ML Scientist

*For all external applicants, we are targeting a start date on or after July 1st 2022 for this position.

This is a Hybrid position within our IT Organization. The role will allow employees to work offsite but will also require onsite work based on business needs. The selected candidate will be expected to commute to the innovation center to which they are assigned as their primary GM facility.

General Motors is seeking to identify highly motivated and qualified individuals for potential future opportunities as AI/ML Scientist or Senior AI/ML Scientists. This is a unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor and help lead a multi-disciplinary team of experienced individuals who will be driving the solution design, development, and deployment of advanced statistical and mathematical solutions using machine learning techniques as well as traditional methods.

The team will generate new algorithmic and software models enabling AI/ML capabilities in enterprise-wide applications. Candidates will develop solutions to problems across the enterprise using AI/ML and other analytical techniques. In some cases, invention and generation of intellectual property for General Motors will be required. As an AI/ML Scientist or  Senior AI/ML Scientist, the chosen candidate will be expected to provide thought/technical leadership for their team as problems are explored, selected, and worked against. Senior AI/ML Scientists will also be expected to provide guidance and mentorship for junior team members.

Experience with predictive modeling techniques based on time series analysis with very high dimensional data sets, especially regarding kinematics is highly desired, as well as experience in generating geospatial feature detection models such as land type, or object detection leveraging areas such as sensor fusion or imagery classification. Candidates should be familiar with relationships between algorithm runtime performance and hardware and software systems that contribute to latency, demand, and failures in distributed inference and training jobs. Candidates should be familiar with techniques from scientific computing such as function interpolation, numerical linear algebra, and Monte Carlo methods. Additionally, candidates should be familiar with algorithms and methods to identify latent class features in both labeled and label-free data.

The candidate will design and lead iterative development and learning cycles in these areas, and ultimately will produce new and creative solutions that will become part of the operating fabric of the global enterprise. The scope of the landscape may include:

  • Geospatial analysis
  • Mobility and behavioral analysis
  • Risk analysis and forecasting
  • Manufacturing process engineering
  • Population health and trend forecasting
  • Bayesian learning and causal inference
  • Explainable artificial intelligence
  • Analysis and fusion of crowdsourced data
  • Autonomous/Semi-Autonomous Driving

Candidates must be collaborative team players who will work closely with  professionals across the enterprise, including scientists, developers, analysts, product leads, compute infrastructure engineers, vehicle engineers and fellow IT professionals.

The candidate should have 7+ years’ experience across a broad set of potential roles, including but not limited to:

  • Research Scientist
  • AI Analyst
  • Developer
  • Architect
  • ML Engineer

Additional desired technical expertise:

  • Analysis and modeling of telematics data, especially from a physical perspective
  • Experience with commercial datasets
  • Telematics experience
  • Manipulating high-volume, high-dimensionality data from varying sources to highlight patterns, anomalies, relationships, and trends with machine learning techniques
  • Modeling data abstractions employing multiple non-linear mathematical and statistical modeling approaches
  • Applying machine learning methodology, with emphasis on applying and integrating machine learning with traditional analytic methods

Development experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Python proficiency required
  • CPU frameworks for machine learning in Python – numpy, pandas, sklearnscikit-learn
  • GPU frameworks for machine learning in Python – Rapids, Pyro
  • Deep learning frameworks in python - PyTorch, Caffe, TensorFlow
  • Modern hyperscale ML technologies and pipelines - Kubernetes, Spark, DASK, Docker, Argo, MLFlow, NVIDIA Triton

  • AI/ML Scientist: Master’s degree with 3+ years’ experience or PhD preferred in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Econometrics, Statistics, or related quantitative areas.
  • Senior AI/ML Scientist: Master’s degree with 7+ years’ experience or PhD with 4+ preferred in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Econometrics, Statistics, or related quantitative areas.
