Application Tech Specialist - Semiconductors

Description

This is a Hybrid Position which does not require you to be on-site full-time. This role enables you to work at a GM facility as required and off-site as needed.

The Role

GM is undergoing a major transformation, both in how we operate and in how we will influence the future of transportation.  The Vehicle Intelligence Platform Semiconductors team is a high-energy, dynamic ‘start-up’ within our company focused on design and application of leading-edge semiconductors, enabling the introduction of new technologies across all of our products.  The team’s scope spans across the hundreds of electronic devices with semiconductors within General Motors.

We are seeking a high-performing Technical Lead interested in leading the semiconductor design and release engineers (DREs) with technical guidance. The Tech Lead would indirectly lead the DREs by holding periodic design reviews, supporting supplier tech reviews, and answering informal routine technical questions which the DREs will have during the development and launch processes. The objective of the Tech Leader is to relentlessly drive a consistent design execution across all products while balancing subsystem level tradeoffs to achieve a high-quality low-enterprise-cost execution.

This individual will be depended on to help create and execute semiconductor strategies within General Motors while building relationships with internal commodity teams as well as semiconductor design and fabrication partners. The successful candidate will embody our company values and leadership behaviors; demonstrate high business acumen, prioritize the development of good working relationships, possess a high level of learning agility, embrace ambiguity, and actively champion change to support our transformation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical coaching for the Semiconductor DREs during the design, application selection, and sourcing phase of the global development process
  • Ensure the DREs understand the semiconductor technical strategy, and drive consistency in the design execution across all electronic devices
  • Lead periodic design reviews and support supplier tech reviews with the DREs on new development projects
  • Be the front line in answering DREs informal routine technical questions
  • Support DREs on complex DFMEAs, PFMEA connectivity, DRBFMs, and DFSS projects
  • Support DREs as needed in CITs, PDTs, VAPIR meetings, etc.
  • Build partnerships and work closely with functional peers across engineering, purchasing, and design staff to execute work in accordance with enterprise semiconductor strategic objectives
  • Build strong semiconductor working relationships ensuring clear understanding of product line ups, manufacturing processes, and supply chain business arrangements
  • Support the drive to create a culture of innovation within the release team
  • Escalate design and timing-related issues to leadership, along with feedback on opportunities for growth in the team’s strategies, processes, and individual’s performance

Qualifications – Required

  • BS in Engineering
  • 8+ years of engineering experience in electrical design release, technical specialist, development, or validation (any combination is acceptable)
  • Knowledge and understanding of Semiconductor component selection and application design
  • Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; demonstrated ability for working across functional and organizational boundaries
  • Strong problem-solving skills and proven ability to learn quickly
  • Demonstrated ability to define component strategy for DREs to follow
  • Demonstrated ability to make complex ideas simple to understand
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate ideas to peers and executives
  • Demonstrated ability of “dealing with ambiguity” to enable timely decision making

Qualifications - Preferred

  • MS in Electrical Engineering
  • 12+ years of engineering experience including experience as a GM DRE on electrical components
  • Understanding of IC design and fabrication
  • Demonstrated engineering leadership (i.e. supervisor, team leader, etc.)
  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills in electrical design and integration
  • Working knowledge of GM electrical architecture
  • Knowledge of GM program timing system and VDP deliverables
