Battery Management Electronics Engineer

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

  • This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week

The Role

GM is looking to add a talented and motivated electrification electronics engineer to support Battery Management System electronics design and development. The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic team that is developing new and innovative opportunities to apply GMs electrification technology including defense, aerospace and locomotive applications.

This job is based in General Motor’s Warren Technical Center and will work with GM’s Global Battery Systems Lab. The lab is a state-of-the-art facility operates 24/7, covers 85,000 square-feet on the Warren Tech Center campus, and has capabilities to test 112 battery packs and 120 battery cells at a time. The General Motors Technical Center has been named a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service. The campus opened in 1956 and houses the GM vehicle engineering center, design center, research and manufacturing engineering. It is the workplace of over 18,000 employees on a 1.1 square-mile campus.

Responsibilities

  • Electric vehicle battery pack management and sensing system electronics design & development including circuit design and simulation

  • Develop electronics and serial data communication simulation at bench, subsystem and system level

  • Develop and run performance tests

  • Lead the electrification electronics design solution tradeoff study to investigate the best design option for advanced energy storage controllers

  • Work with the team and component suppliers to develop and or release new high voltage energy storage technology

  • Lead or support the design and execution of early electrification electronics development activities

  • Support early DFMEA and design robustness activities

  • Identify opportunities for improved specifications and best practices

  • Work with component validation engineer to develop and approve component validation plan and review validation results

  • Provide oversight with total system integration (design/manufacturing, build/test/endurance, vehicle system function/performance/EMC, etc…).

  • Execute root cause and problem resolution of vehicle or component development or validation issues

  • Develop component specifications and requirements in collaboration with systems and architecture engineers


Additional Description

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Engineering, Math, Physics, or Computer Science

  • 2+ years of experience in electronics design, development or validation
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult

  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of electronics

  • Time management skills to meet agreed upon customer deliverables, able to manage multiple projects

  • Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals required

  • Ability to work under limited supervision

  • Strong organization and documentation skills

Desired Skills

  • Masters or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Understanding of aviation standards, requirements and processes

  • 5+ years of experience in electronics design, development or validation

  • Experience with electric vehicle battery systems

  • Functional knowledge of vehicle and hybrid systems

  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills in circuit board design and development
