The Job:

The Additive Manufacturing Lab Supervisor will lead all aspects of the BrightDrop Additive Manufacturing lab in Palo Alto, including capability scoping, facility construction and upgrades, capital planning, equipment install and buy-off, and day-to-day operations. Operations include technical staff people leadership, lab safety, order fulfillment, training, maintenance, and continuous improvement (5S, Kaizen, etc.). Order fulfillment includes all digital and physical operations related to additive part fabrication, including part evaluation, build setup, scheduling, AM machine operation, post-processing and other value stream finishing, and shipping.


The work involves a considerable amount of initiative in decision making and is accompanied by a high level of independent judgment. 

You will work closely with the Global Additive Design & Manufacturing organization (Additive Industrialization Center – AIC) to adopt and integrate GM Additive Manufacturing standards,  processes, and improvements within the BrightDrop Additive Manufacturing Lab. Additionally:

  • You will propose and evaluate the processes for equipment in the Lab

  • Direct the design, development, and/or improvement of manufacturing processes for the Lab

  • You will provide technical support for specific additive operations

  • You will interact on a regular basis with design, product, and manufacturing engineering staffs within BrightDrop to support 3D printing needs

  • Provide day to day technical direction to others on the team (PE, ME, Contract Manufacturer)

  • You will evaluate or monitor expenditures for processes and/or equipment

  • You will handle engineering projects with Product and/or Manufacturing Engineering Staffs

  • For work that cannot be completed internally due to capability or capacity, you will enable or facilitate insourcing to other GM additive sites, or outsourcing to GM qualified additive manufacturing suppliers

Additional Description

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Hire, lead, and develop operations team

  • Maintain all safety documentation for the Lab and conduct regular audits (PPE, Placards, SFMEAs, etc.)

  • Troubleshoot equipment and part quality issues with operations and engineering

  • Coordinate all maintenance activities for facility and equipment

  • Coordinate all new equipment installs with AIC process engineering

  • Manage material procurement and inventory tracking of feedstock and consumables

  • Coordinate daily production plans and manpower requirements

  • Lead operational budget planning and proposal submissions

  • Lead cross functional continuous improvement process meetings using manufacturing analytics

  • Maintain training requirements and tracking for all resident personnel

  • Maintain site security requirements as required for product and materials

Required Qualifications:

  • BA or BS degree

  • Direct hands-on operational experience with AM equipment

  • Experience working in a production environment

  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects with a high degree of autonomy and accountability for results

  • Experience working in an advanced development environment and able to deal with ambiguity

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills required to build relationships

Preferred Requirements

  • BS and/or MS degree in engineering: Mechanical or Manufacturing preferred

  • 2+ years of industry or academic experience working in additive design & manufacturing

  • 2+ years responsible for or leading additive manufacturing site operations

  • 5+ years manufacturing experience

  • Direct operational experience with Stratasys FDM machines and associated post-processing, ideally with Stratasys operator certification

  • Additional operational experience with: HP MJF, EOS SLS, 3D Systems SLA, and associated post-processing

  • Experience with AM system selection, installation, commissioning, and safety buy-off

  • People leader experience – technician and/or technical engineering staff

  • DFSS Black Belt
