What you get to do in this role
As a Lead HMI Designer, you will help the team define the overall Human-Machine Interface for user experience with physical devices in the BrightDrop ecosystem. This of course involves in-vehicle design for smart, connected, electric vehicles, with an experience customized to streamline delivery. You’ll also design user interaction with electric carts which move smaller payloads and can be used with, or independently of, vehicles. You’ll create compelling and useful experiences across all touchpoints for customers ranging from delivery drivers to the general public.
As a member of the UX team, you’ll work with digital UX designers, UX researchers, hardware and software engineers, and vehicle and industrial designers. We’re also ramping up our Design team and hands-on prototyping capabilities in Palo Alto and you’ll be key to making that happen.
Define the overall HMI and UX strategy for delivery-specific vehicle functionality across a variety of in-vehicle hardware and software features.
Work cross-functionally to lead the in-vehicle HMI design process. Collaborate with UX digital designers and prototypers on in-vehicle displays.
Help the UX research team conduct formative research, benchmarking, prototype evaluation, and human performance studies on vehicle hardware and software features.
Work with digital designers, industrial designers, and hardware engineers to create and evaluate product concepts.
Define user journeys and document functional flows. Deliver detailed HMI designs.
Carry out a similarly full range of HMI and UX design activities for electric carts and other hardware, from working with Product on requirements to prototype evaluation and finished designs.
Work with engineering to build up our Palo Alto-based prototyping and test capabilities.
At least 5 years of experience defining HMI for physical devices.
Deep enough experience with manipulation, mechanics, and materials to collaborate closely with industrial designers in creating hardware design solutions.
Firm understanding of in-vehicle driver distraction, engineering guidelines, and methods for evaluating human workload.
Expert-level skills writing user journeys, HMI requirements and standards, and architecting functional flows.
At least 2 years of usability testing experience.
Experience communicating objectives and desired outcomes with hardware and software engineers, digital UX designers, industrial designers, and product teams.
A track record of delivering excellent user experience across hardware and software.
Great to have:
At least 3 years of experience defining in-vehicle features and user interactions.
Drawing and graphic skills in 2D and 3D.
Industrial design experience.
Experience with delivery services.
Experience with autonomous vehicles, intelligent sensors, or IoT devices.
