The Role

You will develop amazing connectivity software and solutions for BrightDrop’s Trace product while cross functionally working with the electrical module team, mobile app, and our cloud development teams.

Senior Mechanical Sustaining Engineer – Mechanical Hardware Team

This position on our new Mechanical Sustaining Engineering team will be a key individual contributor to support the NPI (new product introduction) process and maintain products as they continue throughout their lifecycle. The Senior Mechanical Sustaining Engineer will resolve future technical issues discovered in manufacturing and by our customers for the family of electric cart products currently in development. This position will work independently and sometimes in a lead role on the investigation and improvement of products with key cross functional teams to perform failure analysis, identify design improvements, implement Engineering Change Management, test to validation and document for release to manufacturing.

Responsibilities include

  • Drive mechanical design changes and ECOs for released products & late-stage NPI programs.

  • Identify, analyze and solve problems pertaining to design and manufacturing processes

  • Support case creation to customer service for identifying and addressing critical customer issues

  • Lead root cause analysis and solution implementation for manufacturing, quality, and field reliability issues.

  • Handle customer issues, conduct remote sessions, solve production issues, and reproduce customer issues in our facilities.

  • Help the engineering team implement a wide variety of validation and verification test plans, reliability tests, and DoEs as needed.

  • Work with mechanical, electrical, ID and supply chain team members to improve DFM/DFA & drive production improvements. Recommend alterations to development and design to improve quality of products and/or procedures.

  • Work with our CM factory teams to optimize fixtures, factory tests, cycle times, and reporting.

  • Work with an international network of vendors to bring-up new tooling & achieve stable production of mass produced parts. Establish quality goals & monitor ongoing performance for criteria important to form, fit and function.

  • Work with operations and manufacturing to identify and implement design cost reduction and the identification and qualification of new suppliers

  • Achieve success goals including safety, quality, delivery/lead-time, cost/inventory management

  • Update CAD database/drawings as needed

  • Drive an increase in manufacturing efficiency through analysis of workflow, processes, tooling and equipment

  • Liaison between manufacturing, R&D, marketing, and other cross functional teams

  • Encourage the adoption of best practices throughout Engineering and Operations in areas such as six sigma and lean

  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with 8 years experience, or a Master’s degree in a related field with 6yrs experience.

  • 3+ years experience in a hardware manufacturing environment

  • Ability to travel up to 20%

  • Experience creating and reviewing 2D & 3D CAD drawings

  • Advanced Competence in NX and/or Solidworks

  • Passion for creative problem solving & a scientific approach to picking apart hard problems

  • Superior communication skills including written, oral, and graphic presentation.

  • Incredible analytical and organizational skills; ability and commitment to produce timely and highly accurate work.

  • Fluency with Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Knowledge of DFM practices and experience with a variety of manufacturing processes including injection-molded plastics, formed and stamped sheet metal, castings, extrusions, welding, adhesives, finishes, etc.

  • Positive demeanor and ability to do creative thinking.

  • High level of independent judgment and decision making.

  • Ability to work comfortably and effectively with cross functional team

  • Action-oriented and driven for results.


Additional Description

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter

  • Experience with consumer electronics, consumer packaged goods, and/or human machine interfaces. Human factors, ergonomics and experience with Industrial Design studio also desirable.

  • Experience with structural and thermal analysis techniques for small to large electronics packaging systems.
