Description

At BrightDrop, we are reshaping e-commerce by developing smarter, greener, and more efficient ways to deliver goods and services to your door, while delivering a brighter future for the cities where we live. We are building an ecosystem of all-electric, zero-emissions delivery solutions – from electric vehicles, to ePallets and software that leverages real-time data to drive intelligent optimizations for e-commerce. To deliver on our mission we are growing fast and building a team, based in Palo Alto, with offices in Atlanta and Detroit, that is customer-focused, agile and passionate about innovating for a more sustainable future.

From engineering to product management and operations, BrightDrop is looking for people who can combine a passion for technology and sustainability with high doses of curiosity and rigorous thinking to deliver a better future.

Backed by General Motors, BrightDrop is striving to improve the communities where we live and deliver a better future for generations to come. We hope you’ll join us.

The Role:

In this role you will be responsible for the development of system level requirements for BrightDrop’s last mile products including the BrightDrop EP1.  Working side by side with product engineers to roll those requirements down to subsystem and component designs.  You will need an innovative mindset and a high degree of creativity and initiative to solve complex problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Generate and document systems level requirements for hardware and software systems.

  • Lead technical discussions with cross functional teams to communicate and collect input on new and existing specifications.

  • Translate product features into system requirements and design specifications.

  • Work with Product Engineers to create component specific requirements.

  • Ensure that requirements are implemented during all stages of product development.

  • Create and review system/component test and validation plans to ensure targets and requirements are met.

  • Collaborate with other members of the engineering team to evaluate through testing new design concepts.

  • Understand the impact of performance requirements on product timing and cost.

  • Lead DFMEA activities.

  • Support component and system level testing.

  • Establish, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools.

  • Oversee the development of customized software and hardware requirement.

  • Plan and implement systems automation as required for better efficiency.

  • Formulate and design the security system in place to maintain data safety.

  • Timely report on any glitches, delays, roadblocks, etc.

  • Provide linkage between software and hardware to ensure compatibility (hardware software interface)

  • Familiarity with V model design, Agile Software Development, Waterfall, etc.

  • Expected to challenge the HOW and WHY rather than only how.

  • Understand scope and complexity as it relates to different phases of the life cycle.

  • Plan for Over the Air software updates.

  • Assess and calculate the technical features of the plan to ensure that the Systems Engineering procedures are operating correctly and grow the system from idea to end product.

  • Interact with technical program managers, security, asset management and customers to resolve problems.

  • Establish and document requirements. Clearly define the tasks that the function/feature will perform and how. The success of the design and development phase depends significantly on this phase being well executed.

  • Design and develop the function/feature based on the requirements. The functionalities are designed and tested using the model-based development environment. The function/functionality needs to be tested as it is being developed, ensuring that bugs and errors are fixed early on.

  • In the model-based development, simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink can simulate real-world scenarios. The potential bugs and errors are highlighted and rectified during this phase. Once the development process, testing and architecture are complete and the results are satisfactory, the model – a block diagram – is provided to the software development team.

Additional Description

Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Engineering (Masters preferred).

  • 3+ years of experience in Systems Engineering.

  • Experience writing technical specifications and documentation.

  • Ability to work comfortably and effectively with a cross functional team.

  • Positive attitude, integrity, and confidentiality.

  • High level of independent judgment and decision making.

  • Action-oriented, hands on, and drives for results.

  • Willing to roll up your sleeves to get the job done.
