Cost Engineer, ED&D – Exteriors/Closures

Please note: this position is considered hybrid . This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired. In the USA, this is an employee who lives 100 miles or less from their designated, primary worksite.

The Cost Engineer is responsible to create, analyze and validate subsystem component level ED&D (Engineering Design & Development) cost targets.  The ED&D Cost Engineer will work with multiple cross-functional organizations and function as the single voice to the internal customer for subsystem ED&D related cost information.  The ED&D Cost Engineer will be responsible for managing the standardized cost methodologies and processes used for validating component design & testing. The selected candidate will have a high degree of autonomy and must possess the business acumen and technical expertise to drive cost reduction efforts.

This role involves a high level of independent judgment, initiative and creativity in support of multiple programs. The ED&D Cost Engineer will have exposure to the next generation of engineering design while helping to shape the integration of leading edge automotive technologies.


  • Analyze costs to engineer, design and test components from inception to production
  • Collaborate globally to comprehend manufacturing and process differences in all regions
  • Provide design feedback for optimum cost and processing performance
  • Partner with GM’s purchasing team during supplier negotiations
  • Actively pursue avenues to reduce costs to meet budgets
  • Occasional domestic and international travel to supplier facilities for enhanced costing collaboration

Additional Description


  • Bachelors degree preferred
  • Experience in the financial evaluation of technical concepts and comprehensive understanding of vehicle exterior and closure hardware design and testing requirements
  • Specific knowledge of engineering discipline (e.g. electronics, software, control systems) within job-related area
  • Familiarity with program standard timing process, gates, and milestones
  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of operation of mechanical /electrical mechanisms
  • Able to assimilate large amounts of cost data, condense this data for vehicle level reporting to upper management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering project management
  • Engineering experience with the following: 1. Development of supplier component quotes to OEM’s; 2. Exterior and/or Closure Hardware; 3. Automotive Subsystem and Component Assembly; 4. Innovative Technology
