Electric Motor Design Engineer

Description

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility approximately 1-3 days per week.

The Electric Motor Design Engineer will be focused on traction motors within the Electric Motor team. Responsible for definition of requirements, execution of design, analysis, development, and testing of electric motors. Provides technical direction to other engineers, or engineering support personnel.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead & coordinate execution of electric machine designs for Hybrid & Electric Vehicle programs.

  • Develop models of electric machines for system level analyses.

  • Generates technical solutions for current, new and major programs.

  • Provides technical leadership for advanced technology development.

  • Performs complex design analysis.

  • Develops engineering designs (including subsystems).

  • Implements engineering changes.

  • Specifies and balances system requirements.

  • Plans and implements test and/or development programs.

  • Communicates, coordinates, and consults with engineering departments and customers.

  • Stays abreast of new technology and competitive products.

  • Travels as required.


Additional Description

Required Skills:

  • M.S in Electrical Engineering.

  • 3-5 years in electrical machine design & analysis (graduate work accepted).

  • Extensive knowledge & experience required (user & mentor) in electro-magnetic machine design using FEA tools.

  • Understanding of engineering theory and principles of design.

  • Design, development, and testing experience with electric machines.

  • Working knowledge of automotive systems.

  • Knowledge of computer software as it pertains to engineering.

  • Working knowledge of electric motors, or hybrid systems.

  • Strong interest and ability in integration and system understanding.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve.

  • High level of project management skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others.

  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual or difficult.

  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills in job-related area required.

  • Travel as required (domestic & international).

Desired Skills:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering.

  • 5+ years of experience (related graduate work accepted).

  • Specialization in Electrical Machines & Drives.

  • Working knowledge of electric motor design optimization methods.

  • Working knowledge of electric motor manufacturing, testing and development.

  • Working knowledge of electric motor and inverter controls.

  • Interest in & passion for automotive technology.
