Electromagnetic Design Technical Specialist

Description

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility approximately 1-3 days per week.

As an Electromagnetic Design Technical Specialist, you will provide technical expertise, direction, and guidance to cross functional electric drive teams throughout the development process. You will collaborate across the Electric Drive space with a diverse team of technical specialists and provide technical leadership within a team of electromagnetic design engineers with a diverse background and level of experience. Use the appropriate balance of freedom for creativity, project autonomy & individual responsibility with technical guidance, oversight and

mentorship where required.  

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Electromagnetic Technical Roadmap development and collaborate across technical domains to ensure Roadmap alignment.

  • Lead electric machine design activities for Electric Vehicle & Hybrid traction applications and coordinate across domains to balance requirements and meet program imperatives.

  • Develop, scope and lead or approve & direct ATW projects in alignment with technical roadmaps to support technology objectives.

  • Generates technical solutions for current, new and major programs and support programs throughout the development cycle.

  • Mentor internal team members and support technical growth of individuals & share knowledge across the larger Electric Drive & Electrification teams.

  • Advance the state-of-the-art of electric motor and electric drive system design by developing innovative methods, tools, and process definition and approving standard work updates.

  • Actively pursue cost reduction, size reduction and efficiency improvement advanced projects involving electric drive systems.

  • Work closely with Motor Mechanical Design & Release, Materials, Motor Manufacturing, Calibration, Development & Validation teams throughout the development timeline to balance requirements & deliver class leading electric motor designs that meet performance, quality & cost targets.

  • Lead and/or provide technical input to urgent issues, PRTS and Lead Safety Tether when applicable

  • Maintain a complete in-depth understanding of GM production applications across traction motor space.

  • Stay abreast of technology trends across industry and academia and perform benchmarking where applicable. Research industry trends and practices to develop future motor design capability.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with industry technical experts, key university labs, and national laboratories

  • Travels as required.


Additional Description

Required Skills:

  • PHD in Engineering with a focus in electric machine design & controls or equivalent work experience.

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in the field.

  • Extensive knowledge in advanced motor design and controls.

  • Extensive knowledge in electric machines and power electronics theory and

  • Extensive knowledge finite element design relating to internal permanent motor and induction motor design.

  • Experience in multidomain optimization for traction motor design for production automotive design.

  • Experience in corelating analytical motor performance data to test data.

  • Knowledge in position sensing and integration into control system.

  • Understanding of electrified vehicle system and integration.

  • Working knowledge of motor manufacturing processes.

  • High level of technical problem-solving skills & ability to deal with ambiguity.

Desired Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of electric motor design optimization methods.

  • Working knowledge of typical electric machine standard works for automotive traction applications.

  • Working knowledge of power electrics design, controls & calibration in the areas of electric drive systems.

  • Experience & knowledge of automotive architecture development, especially in relation to electrification applications.
