Embedded Software Engineer - SDV


Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively.  The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.  This position requires an employee to be on-site monthly.

As we move towards our ZERO ZERO ZERO vision for the future, we are looking to add hardworking individuals to our Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) Data Engineering team! On this team, we contribute to that vision by connecting the right vehicle data to the right consumers to make data driven decisions possible. 

As an Embedded Software Engineer you will work in a scrum team adhering to the principals of the SAFe Agile Framework.  Our team works on defining, implementing, and leveraging new and existing in-vehicle/cloud enablers to collect vehicle data with quality, integrity, and efficiency.  At General Motors, we’re proud to offer a vast array of career development resources to help you develop, grow, and make the most of your career at GM. 

Your Responsibilities:  

  • Development of applications in Java/J2EE/Python/Spring boot/C++/Kotlin 

  • Software analysis, code analysis, requirements analysis software review, identification of code metrics, system risk analysis, software reliability analysis, object-oriented analysis, and design 

  • Diagnose, debug, and solve issues related to vehicle hardware and software 

  • Design and test skills for scalable code deployment 

  • Contribute to the continued evolution of the team’s workflows and processes to further improve velocity and quality 

  • Interface with customers across GM to understand requirements, provide status updates, and explain the data collection process 

  • Develop relationships across various organizations while sustaining open communications to enable collaboration with the common goal of customer satisfaction 

  • Conduct research on new products and drive implementation to benefit/optimize overall software development 

Required Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related Engineering degree 

  • 3+ years experience in embedded software development 

  • Proficiency in Java/C++/Kotlin/Spring boot 

  • 1+ years in Android development 

  • Hands on Expertise in integrating various systems and deriving solutions 

  • Comfortable working in a fast-pace and innovative environment where problems are complex and not always well-defined 

  • Ability to work in a team environment where knowledge sharing, open communication, and documentation is encouraged 

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships across various organizations 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • 5+ years experience in embedded software development 

  • Experience with GIT/source code management, CI/CD development, open-source SW development/contributor 

  • Experience in automotive systems and vehicle data sets 

  • Knowledge and experience with CAN, LIN or Ethernet communications protocol 

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, comfortable presenting to leadership and tailoring to multiple audiences 

  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and shift priorities as required to meet requirements and deadlines 

  • Ability to prioritize work with only limited direction from supervisor

  • Willingness to learn and quickly adjust to new tools and systems

The determination by HR and the Hiring Manager as to whether an offer will be lateral or promotional will be based on a candidate's relevant experience and whether the role will amount to a significant increase in level of responsibility.
