Failure Analysis Engineer

GM is seeking a skilled Failure Analysis Engineer to join Chemistry Platform and Electrode Integration team to provide hands-on analysis as a Failure Analysis engineer and collaborate with lab and multi-functional partners to solve some of the industry’s problems. The candidate should have hands-on experience of a variety of materials characterization techniques (CT/X-Ray, SEM/EDS, teardown analysis, etc.) and fundamental failure analysis methodology with deep understanding of battery cell design and electrochemistry of Lithium-ion battery cells to Perform root cause analysis to support battery development. The candidate will work on problem solving and meet with multi-functional partners, collect, and distill information, advise on the best path forward, and communicate back to the technical staff. This candidate will be responsible to help drive the team toward solutions, clear roadblocks out of the way, and ensure streamlined by designing and executing materials and electrochemical characterization experiments to study factors that influence the degradation of battery components under different testing conditions Implement a systematic investigation approach for identifying the root causes of failures and develop recommendations for corrective actions.

This position requires sound technical knowledge and expertise related to the functional area of responsibility. You will need prior experience and/or knowledge of mechanical, instrumentation, electronics, testing/driving and fabrication. Translates business objectives to actionable work for the work group. Supports leading new processes and methods in line with departmental goals.

  • Perform root cause analysis for lithium-ion batteries to support battery development

  • Design and execute materials and electrochemical characterization experiments to study factors that influence the degradation of battery components under different testing conditions

  • Implement a systematic investigation approach for identifying the root causes of failures and develop recommendations for corrective action

  • Organize and carry out characterization and battery failure analysis work to support development work, engineering, and production departments

  • Acquire and interpret analytical and cell test data using materials characterization and electrochemical techniques to supplement FA activity

  • Perform tear downs and prepare reports

  • Determine best techniques and most effective paths to attain the desired information to uncover failure modes

  • Develop and implement FA protocols and failure replication testing

  • Train, guide, and define tasks for technicians to facilitate work at high standards


Additional Description

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor degree in Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field

  • 8+ years of experience in lithium-ion battery research, development, and failure/ root cause analysis

  • Hands-on experience in lithium-ion battery teardown process and characterization of battery components by diffraction, microscopy, and spectroscopy tools

  • Deep know-how in variety of electrochemical techniques (CV, EIS, GITT, PITT) for battery diagnostics

  • Experience in battery material modeling for aging prediction and Li-ion battery materials performance and degradation

  • Expertise in multiple characterization techniques including XRD, SEM/EDS, FIB including sample preparation methods and fundamental failure analysis methodology

  • Deep understanding in battery materials, interfaces, electrolytes, and electrochemistry to drive failure analysis of battery cell

  • Familiar with statistical analysis of failure rates and times (risk analysis)

  • Strong verbal and written communication, teamwork, and project management skills

  • Attention to details, ability to work well individually and in team settings

  • Knowledge in cell architecture

  • Ability to work independently in experimental design to resolve technical issues.

Preferred Skills:

  • MS or higher degree in Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field

  • 10+ years of experience in lithium-ion battery research, development, and failure/ root cause analysis
