Investment Accounting - Financial Analyst

The Investment Accounting team within the Controllership organization is looking for an ambitious, self-driven candidate to join the team. This team member will be a key participant in the day to day management of the investment oversight of stand-alone defined benefit pension plans and defined contribution plans sponsored by GM and certain U.S. and Canadian affiliates.  This role will play a vital role in the annual audit and regulatory filing processes and the preparation and review of the annual financial statements. This position requires considerable interaction with various internal departments such as Employee Benefits, Legal, Tax as well as with external auditors and other third-party benefit plan service providers (e.g., trustees, record keepers, actuaries). The team member will also coordinate with GM Global Business Services to ensure proper and timely payment of invoices and will have responsibilities related to the financial statements of the asset management subsidiary.  Also, the team member will partake in the assembling of global pension investments data for inclusion in the GM annual Form 10-K report. This role requires a high level of accuracy, creativity, and initiative. Below represents some sample responsibilities related to the work involved:

  • Identify, interpret and analyze potential accounting risks and issues

  • Research and analyze accounting transactions and contracts

  • Identify and execute internal controls, SOX compliance and financial procedures Assist with internal and external financial reporting - including analyzing consolidated results, drafting regulatory documents (SEC,ERISA,FSCO etc) and management review reports, ensuring quality, and administering strict timeline

  • Provide and maintain supporting documentation for accounting work and ongoing internal controls testing maintaining support documentation/files for area of responsibility

  • Research and interpret new accounting standards and brainstorm how each applies to GM as well as comply with external 10-Q/10-K reporting requirements

  • Provides direction to a team of individuals with similar functional responsibility

  • Participate in monthly and quarterly closing cycles

  • Review and prepare month end accruals and supporting analyses

  • Coordinate and troubleshoot timely vendor payments related to obligations of the pension plans

  • Liaise and assist business unit reporting staff

  • Review/prepare direction letters to trustee/custodian to ensure proper accounting for complex investment transactions

  • Facilitate annual audit activities, which encompasses preparing workpaper analyses, examining data submissions from internal and external parties and coordinating deliverables to the external auditors

  • Assist with continuous development of, and   implementation of, new information and new reporting tools

  • Evaluate current accounting practices and policies and drive continuous improvement

  • Prepare and review schedules related to the audited financial statements of the benefit plans, including footnote disclosures.

  • Review the annual Form 5500 and other applicable reports filed with the D.O.L / I.R.S for all GM sponsored benefit plans/trusts subject to E.R.I.S.A. reporting requirements

  • Maintain understanding of and ability to apply accounting standards

  • Participate in special projects


 


Additional Description

Basic Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree with major in accounting

  • A minimum of 2 years of combined industry and public accounting experience either in compensation and benefits accounting, plan/fund/investment accounting or corporate balance sheet management

  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated commitment to teamwork and partnerships

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Strong understanding of internal controls

  • Ability to prioritize assignments/projects and multi-task within established time constraints

  • Highly proficient personal computer skills and technology driven

  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical abilities

  • Ability to assimilate information quickly in a consistent and accurate manner

  • Proactive work style and desire to take on additional responsibilities

  • Aptitude to resolve issues and embrace and manage change

Basic Preferred

  • Technical accounting background

  • Experience with SAP a plus

  • CPA or CA - active license holder

  • Experience with investment accounting and employee benefit plan accounting/reporting; thorough knowledge of ASC 820, 960, 962 and D.O.L reporting regulations

  • Familiarity with Canadian benefit plan regulatory filing requirements and International Financial Reporting Standards a plus

Compensation:

  • The median level of salary compensation for this role is ($91,332).
