Fuel Cell Turbo Compressor Sr. Design Release Engineer

Description

This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

OVERVIEW

Senior engineer with experience on multiple production propulsion/powertrain system applications to provide technical direction for fuel cell system high voltage turbo compressor design and release. Proficient in design and analysis of air machines, program execution and supplier relationships.

The broad scope of responsibilities will include:

  • Functioning as senior design release engineer for fuel cell system air compressor. Component will have high complexity and/or change level.

  • Managing integration with compressor inverter power module that includes electrical interfaces and compressor physical integration into multiple fuel cell applications.

  • Providing technical direction for fuel cell system design and assembly and validation activities, including issue resolution.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for definition of requirements, design, analysis, development and control of complex subsystems where a considerable amount of creativity and initiative are involved. The individual will receive general direction from supervisor, but will need to exercise independent judgment and solution development.   

  • Develops SOR (system of requirements) for component

  • Support all component issue resolution from concept to production

  • Ensure all design aspects are addressed to meet key program milestones and timing

  • Perform detailed design analyses associated with compressor and inverter design requirements

  • Leads and Supports technical review and sourcing process

  • Supports program team as required in PAPIR, PET, CIT, Dev. Val Meetings.

  • Defines ICD (interface control document) requirements for component and subsystems, negotiates and reaches agreement with interfacing components, works with others to resolve issues

  • Leads PDT (product development team) for component/subsystems (e.g. Open Issues Tracking, timing, parts list, DFMEA, etc.)

  • Establish component and subsystem designs to meet program performance and timing requirements

  • Validates design using analytical tools including finite element analysis, virtual builds and others at component level

  • Collaborate with validation, including establishment of component validation plan

  • Coordinates engineering activities with other functions (e.g. suppliers, supplier quality, purchasing) to ensure delivery of product meeting requirements and imperatives

  • Translates lessons learned into best practices


Additional Description

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Aerospace or other engineering discipline

  • 7+ years of relevant work experience

  • Extensive knowledge in aerodynamic machine theory and principles

  • Ability to lead DFMEA, FEA, CFD or other analysis required for part integration into a complex air, thermal or hydrogen system High level of project management skills and the ability to influence those that are not direct reports

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with domestic and international business partners

  • Design, development, validation or release experience

  • Ability to create and present information to leadership, peers, customers and suppliers in a clear and concise manner

  • Must function well in engineering design team environment and have experience working with manufacturing engineering, and other engineering teams

  • Organized with strong attention to detail

  • Ability to travel to global locations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master of Science

  • Experience with fuel cell or electrified systems

  • Experience working with global partners
