Functional Safety Software Engineer

Description

This is a Hybrid position within our IT Organization. The role will allow employees to work offsite but will also require onsite work based on business needs. The selected candidate will be expected to commute to the innovation center to which they are assigned as their primary GM facility. Relocation may be provided.

As a Software Developer within General Motors; you will be responsible for leading a development team and ensuring that software is designed and developed using sound, repeatable, industry standard methodologies. You will work in a technical management role as well as perform hands-on planning, architecture, and design as required. Additionally, you will provide oversight to development activities to ensure the highest utilization of resources toward delivery of elite capabilities aligned with GM corporate and business direction. This position will enable you to advise, coach/mentor development teams and will review the software being developed to insure the highest standards. Part of your goals will be to be excellent in code quality, performance, stability, security and general delivery to requirements and project timing.

Must be comfortable leading highly technical teams through the software development lifecycle (SDLC) utilizing industry standard/best practice for software development approaches

The following represents requirements for this role:

You will have broad software project delivery experience in leading teams developing applications using a variety of tools, languages, frameworks and technologies. Capable of leading concurrent projects and/or initiatives within GM.

Ability to handle issue resolution and remove roadblocks by navigating complex corporate environments and processes

Understanding of Performance tuning, usability assessment/improvement, automation technologies

Understands security risks for applications and code remediation techniques

Oversees Integration efforts of software or solutions with existing software/systems

Understands code quality analysis results and remediation mechanisms

Strong Knowledge of maintaining and debugging live software systems

Providing advice and technical support for various projects within their domain

Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. Possess technical writing knowledge around system design specification and user documentation of software systems

Understand and maintain compliance with GM standards and industry standard methodology

Provides career guidance and mentoring of software developers. Assures that team adheres to all GM Resource Requirements such as Timekeeping, Project Management and Training

Assists with identifying/selecting the best talent. Responsible for directing work, leading performance and providing guidance / coaching to team members. Leads the culture within their team, holds themselves and others accountable for demonstrating GMs values and cultural behaviors. Models GM behaviors and creates a winning culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze the feature hazards and risks to develop system level Technical Safety Concept and Technical Safety Requirements
  • Secure traceability and maintenance of the safety requirements within the project system framework
  • Review safety plans and maintain safety plans
  • Lead the safety analyses (FTA, FMEDA, DFMEA) the project
  • Act as the domain expert to resolve technical issues with OEMs, suppliers, and other teams
  • Participate during the design reviews from a safety perspective
  • Active participation in Functional Safety methods development
  • Participate in development of safety processes to meet ASIL D requirements
  • Perform technical assessments for the system safety compliance to ISO 26262
  • Design and review automated safety testing

Must Haves (Basic Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in electrical engineering, software or comparable
  • 2+ years of experience in functional safety for automotive, 5+ years preferred
  • Ability to solve problems analytically and collaboratively
  • Lead with confidence – thought leaders who empower those around them
  • Development and implementation of safety concepts
  • Safety analysis methods (FTA, FMEA, FMEDA)
  • Strong systems engineering background
  • Ability to drive technical solutions for SW design
  • Strong mentoring and team building skills
  • Strong presentation, communication, and documentation skills
  • Technical leadership

Nice to Haves (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Expert knowledge of ISO 26262
  • Experienced with Linux
