GM Defense Packaging Engineer


The GM Defense SMT Logistics team supports GM Defense inbound packaging and cost.  The Container Engineer takes inputs from multiple stakeholders, understanding supply chain & manufacturing constraints to develop a robust inbound solution (packaging & logistics) to ship components & sub-assemblies into assembly plants. The Packaging Engineer works closely with GMD Purchasing to optimize total enterprise cost solutions. This involves a high level of independent judgment, strategic vision, detailed analysis, technical understanding of manufacturing process, and outstanding communication skills.  The Container Engineer will be the 1st point of contact for container flow issues and will be involved on the best enterprise solution to maintain production at both the assembly plants and part suppliers.

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively.  The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.


  • Executing deliverables in support of the logistics organization's business objectives.

  • Provides support of one of the key areas within Logistics and / or Containers organization to ensure business objectives are met or exceeded in all areas including customer, quality, service, responsiveness, people, product and financial initiatives for the current programs.

  • Communicates within the function as well as other functions, external affiliates, regulatory agencies.

  • Develop and maintain expendable specifications for GMD that are similar to but different to the GM specifications due to government requirement, low volume and storage concerns for extended storage time (all time buys).

  • Influences others within the organization to accept new concepts, practices, and approaches.

  • Identify problems, update or modify work methods that may be complex in the work area without the benefit of defined procedures.

  • Promote GM's values and makes customer-focused decisions.

  • Work to minimize any container shortages that would effect production.

  • Identify potential improvements to correct packaging and work with the plant, supplier and GPSC to get the packaging changed.

  • Understand long term storage requirements to protect part quality due to the duration of the programs and the all time buy implications.

  • Removing Roadblocks & Resolving Issues/Complaints: Observes and steps up to remove roadblocks and resolve potential issues.

Additional Description


  • Bachelors in Engineering, Supply Chain or equivalent education

  • 3+ years of automotive industry experience

  • Previous Purchasing experience considered to be highly desirable


  • Deep understanding/knowledge of material dept operation, manufacturing processes, and departmental relationships

  • Deep understanding of material flow and requirements

  • Analytical ability where problems are complex

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and ability to implement and apply GMS principles
