GM Fuel Cell Applications Components - Design Release Engineer


This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

Open to Canadian Residents who are willing to commute to their US primary work location at least 60% of the time.


General Motors (GM) has a rich history in hydrogen fuel cell technology dating back nearly 60 years, transferring NASA Apollo space mission learning to the very first fuel cell powered automotive concept vehicle – the 1966 Electrovan.

Today, GM’s Global Fuel Cell Business is creating clean energy solutions for a gamut of commercial vehicle segments as well as non-traditional, non-automotive land, sea, and air applications, including stationary power and hydrogen energy storage.  Most recently, GM announced that it will be:

Responsible for definition of component requirements, design, analysis, development, and control of complex subsystems where a considerable amount of creativity and initiative are involved. The individual will receive general direction from supervisor but will need to exercise independent judgment and solution development.

  • Release of the Fuel Cell Applications Structural Components

  • Develop SOR (Statement of Requirements) for component

  • Lead and support technical review and sourcing process

  • Analyzes design through design failure modes effects analysis (DFMEA)

  • Establish component and subsystem designs to meet program performance and timing requirements

  • Demonstrates that designs meet requirements through analysis, development, and validation processes

  • Support program team as required in PAPIR, PET, CIT, Dev. Val Meetings.

  • Validate design using analytical tools including finite element analysis, virtual builds, and others at component level

  • Collaborate with validation, including establishment of component validation plan

  • Coordinate engineering activities with other functions (e.g. suppliers, supplier quality, purchasing) to ensure delivery of product meeting requirements and imperatives

  • Translates lessons learned into best practices

  • Ensures designs meet serviceability requirements

  • Support warranty issue resolution

This role is posted at both the 7th and 6th level. The determination by HR and the Hiring Manager as to whether an offer will be lateral or promotional will be based on a candidate’s relevant experience and whether the role will amount to a significant increase in level of responsibility.

Additional Description


  • MS or BS in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Metallurgical or Aeronautical Engineering or 3 years of equivalent experience required

  • Knowledge in design and release of structural components

  • Experience working with suppliers

  • Experience in problem solving

  • Ability to lead DFMEA, FEA, CFD or other analysis required for part integration

  • High level of project management skills and the ability to influence those that are not direct reports

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with domestic and international business partners

  • Design, development, validation, or release experience

  • Ability to create and present information to leadership, peers, customers, and suppliers in a clear and concise manner

  • Ability to travel to global locations


  • Multiple DRE assignments (various PMT’s)

  • Experience in structural components castings
