This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

The GM HYDROTEC Fuel Cell Design Integration and Components Release Team is looking for HYDROTEC Fuel Cell Components DREs (FC Components DREs). These leaders will be tasked with the Design and Release of Fuel Cell Components in the execution of the HYDROTEC fuel cell programs:  introducing GM’s first commercial HYDROTEC Fuel Cell Systems (GEN2 FCS), next generation HYDROTEC Fuel Cell Systems (GEN3 FCS), and the pioneering fuel cell application – the HYDROTEC fuel cell power cube.  The HYDROTEC FC Components DREs will lead the design and release of GM’s fuel cell product engineering co-development and manufacturing joint venture with Honda (FCSM LLC), in addition to several new GM-only power cube applications for commercial trucks, locomotives, aerospace, and power generation.

We are looking for HYDROTEC FC Components DREs in the following concentrations:

  • Fuel Cell bipolar plates, seals and gaskets

  • Membranes

  • Catalyst materials and coating processes

Key Responsibilities:

Responsible for definition of requirements, design, analysis, development and control of complex subsystems where a considerable amount of creativity and initiative are involved. The individual will receive general direction from supervisor, but will need to exercise independent judgment and solution development.   

  • Develop SOR (statement of requirements) for component

  • Support all component issue resolution from concept to production

  • Ensure all design aspects are addressed to meet key program milestones and timing

  • Perform detailed design analyses as required

  • Lead and support technical review and sourcing process

  • Support program team as required in PAPIR, PET, CIT, Dev. Val Meetings.

  • Lead PDT (product development team) for component/subsystems (e.g. Open Issues Tracking, timing, parts list, DFMEA, etc.)

  • Establish component and subsystem designs to meet program performance and timing requirements

  • Validate design using analytical tools including finite element analysis, virtual builds and others at component level

  • Collaborate with validation, including establishment of component validation plan

  • Coordinate engineering activities with other functions (e.g. suppliers, supplier quality, purchasing) to ensure delivery of product meeting requirements and imperatives

  • Translates lessons learned into best practices

FOR GM INTERNAL CANDIDATES: This role is posted at both the 7th and 6th level. The determination by HR and the Hiring Manager as to whether an offer will be lateral or promotional will be based on a candidate’s relevant experience and whether the role will amount to a significant increase in level of responsibility.

Additional Description


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or Materials Science

  • 5+ years of experience in materials development, metallurgy or thin alloy steel manufacturing

  • Detailed knowledge of industry recognized material standards - GMW, SAE, ASTM, ISO, JIS, etc.

  • Familiarity with common engine & fuel cell materials, prime forming processes, heat treat, joining and other metallurgical and chemical processes

  • Ability to lead DFMEA, FEA, CFD or other analysis required for part integration.

  • High level of project management skills and the ability to influence those that are not direct reports

  • High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with domestic and international business partners

  • Design, development, validation or release experience

  • Ability to create and present information to leadership, peers, customers and suppliers in a clear and concise manner

  • Must function well in engineering design team environment and have experience working with manufacturing engineering, and other engineering teams

  • Organized with strong attention to detail

  • Ability to travel to global locations


  • Master of Science Degree

  • Experience with fuel cell or electrified systems

  • Experience working with global partners

  • Thin alloy steel manufacturing or stamping experience

  • Materials laboratory experience
