GM Project Engineer- Gen 3 Fuel Cell Systems


This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

The Project Engineer Gen 3 Fuel Cell Systems will be involved with the latest fuel cell technology in the General Motors portfolio and interact with both internal and external electrification products customers. The Project Engineer will support the execution of projects primarily focused on fuel cell design for both automotive and non-automotive applications and will support these projects through on-time builds, reviews, gates, achievements and issue resolution. 

This job is based in General Motor’s Pontiac Engineering Center and will work in GM’s Fuel Cell Systems Lab.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Lead fuel cell projects.

  • Support technical discussions with external customers.

  • Support creation of FCS system and subsystem DFMEAs and DRBFMs and ensure no redundancy or missed areas exist between them.

  • Provide build and development support.

  • Evaluates designs, analysis, development, and testing of engineering projects where creativity and initiative are involved as well as a high level of independent judgment. 

  • Utilize UG skills to design, check designs, check design integration, and run basic analysis as required.

  • Support experimental and prototype build projects. 

  • Support the FCS assembly in design integration and workshops involving FCS integration issues

  • Assists in implementing engineering changes.

  • Communicates, coordinates and consults with engineering departments and customers.

  • Develop and maintain propulsion system applications manuals

  • Support the completion of ICDs internally and externally

  • Stays abreast of new technology and competitive products

  • May travel to customers if needed

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Additional Description


  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.

  • 2 years of related engineering experience.

  • Knowledge of fuel cell systems.

  • Design, development, validation or release experience.

  • Ability to build and present information to leadership, peers, customers and suppliers in a clear and concise manner.

Desired Skills:

  • Advanced degree preferred.

  • Hands-on experience working in high-voltage laboratory and dynamometer environment.

  • Experience with Bills of Design, Statement of Requirements, DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), and Design Reviews.

  • DFSS certification.
