Industrial Engineer - Material Systems / Indirect


Do you want to be part of a diverse team of Industrial Engineers working on the latest vehicle program?   At Lansing Delta Township, we will manufacture the next generation Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia.  We are looking for an energetic and passionate Industrial Engineer that will work directly with production in implementing lean manufacturing systems. 

You will be challenged to influence the development of manufacturing processes to support the build of our vehicles.  You will be responsible to handle standardized work for future products alongside the core team and help to launch extraordinary products. In steady state, you will drive continuous improvement projects.

The main purpose of the Industrial Engineer is to work to eliminate waste of time, money, materials, person-hours, machine time, energy and other resources that do not generate value.

The position will develop, recommend, and implement changes which will result in the improvement of manufacturing processes and or product quality. The ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced manufacturing environment is critical to your success General Motors. The ideal candidate for this position is a someone who has a Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related field, along with experience working in a manufacturing environment.

Optimize sequence of operations and work flow.

Work to improve efficiencies through waste elimination and process improvements.

Implement common Industrial Engineering business practices and processes.  

  • Maintain accurate time studies of material drivers through application of standard time data charts 

  • Eliminate ergonomic conditions through detailed assessment of dolly and container weights, and material shelf heights 

  • Become an expert of the material flow plan within the assembly plant (Plan for Every Part) 

  • Determine most efficient methods of delivering material from plant docks to final using location 

  • Create layouts and optimize material storage locations based on space allocation and inventory plan 

  • Develop and apply best practices for Lean Material Strategies (LMS) to all aspects of material planning 

  • Develop and maintain layouts for material kitting and sequencing operations 

  • Maintain accurate time studies for operators working in material kitting and sequencing operations 

  • Drive continuous improvement efforts through elimination of waste (reduce travel distance and total container moves) 

  • Develop labor plans for material department productivity  

  • Support change management projects by developing line balance plans and participating in production trials 

  • Support trials and change management efforts for the Material department 

  • Maintain areas of responsibility for future model year changes related to new parts and new containers 

Industrial Engineering Skills  

  • Knowledge of time study and motion analysis 

  • Background and experience in time study and motion analysis 

  • Background and experience in human factors engineering / ergonomic analysis 

  • Background and experience in documentation of standardized work 

  • Experience in implementation of lean manufacturing concepts, such as Six Sigma 

  • Excellent skills in Microsoft Office (heavily focused on Excel and PowerPoint) 

  • Working knowledge of computer aided drafting (AutoCAD / SolidWorks / LineDesigner) 

  • Understanding of Supply Chain concepts including material flow, logistics, and containerization 

Interpersonal Skills -  either needed to do the job well or that will be gained through job experience   

  • Self-motivated individual with continuous improvement focus 

  • Project management and time management skills 

  • Ability to work collaboratively with all levels of the organization 

  • Highly developed oral & written communication skills 

  • Refined problem-solving skills 

Preferred: Qualifications  

  • Bachelors in Industrial Engineering

  • Proficient in GMOS and GM Standard Time Data  

  • Previous Industrial engineering experience 

  • Vehicle Launch experience
