Who You Are
As a member of GM’s Research and Development organization, you will engage with GM’s researchers and scientists to ensure protection of the intellectual property that they create in various technology areas. The technology encompassed includes connected vehicle, propulsion, advanced materials, sensors and processors, manufacturing technology, battery technology, mobility and more. You will manage invention submissions from researchers and scientists from conception to expiration. You will compile and manage information related to invention records submitted by GM’s researchers and scientists. You will guide and train inventors to refine their concepts into protectable subject matter.
What You Will Do
Understand global business unit goals for intellectual property assets, and define appropriate measures for R&D’s patent portfolio management based on these goals
Understand GM’s strategic technologies to support the promotion of and mining of intellectual property in these areas
Develop strategies for foreign filing and global patent coverage with an eye on the best coverage and protections balanced with budget availability
Develop, track, and report on metrics related to intellectual property assets
Develop patent filing strategies, patent maps and competitive intelligence for R&D project areas
Coordinate with legal staff, inventors and management to ensure that strategic intellectual property assets are identified and protected
Conduct workshops on various intellectual property related topics to promote quality and resourcefulness and drive efforts to encourage invention submissions from new employees and under-represented inventors
Host brain-storming sessions and break-the-patent sessions
Evaluate inventions based on knowledge of technology and intellectual property to provide recommendations on how to protect the invention to meet strategic goals
Develop claim strategies for inventions to be filed as patents
Evaluate claim scope from applications receiving a notice of allowance and advise the business on continuation strategies
Monitor annuities and maintenance fees and advise on end-of-life strategies for granted patents
Facilitate awareness of R&D intellectual property assets within the organization and coordinate with business units on usage of R&D intellectual property assets
Utilizing docketing software to memorialize, track, and support all above listed activities
Coordinate, support, communicate and have a good cultural fit with all members of the Corporate Intellectual Property team in North American and globally
Participate in training related to corporate policies, position functions and self-development goals
What You Need
Bachelor of Science degree in a technical field of study (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, etc.)
USPTO Registered Patent Agent or Intellectual Property Lawyer
3+ years of patent prosecution and client counseling experience
Main drafting attorney/agent on at least 50 filed patent applications
Experience responding to office actions utilizing compact prosecution strategies and proof of bringing a number of patent applications to issue
