Interior Design Release Engineer

This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively.  The employee’s role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.  This position requires an employee to be onsite monthly.

The Global Interiors and Thermal Cabin Comfort Group is seeking experienced, motivated engineers to support the next generation of sophisticated systems within our IP and Console group. Are you up for the challenge?

Electrifying the future will include development instrument panels (IP) and consoles that contain a wide array of next generation displays and electronics. You will balance a list of vehicle and occupant performance requirements while engineering the highly styled instrument panel and console. These are the major systems that a customer sees and touches daily.

There are also opportunities developing the metallic structures that are the backbone of the instrument panel. You will balance a list of vehicle and occupant performance requirements while engineering the backbone of the cockpit. Collaboration with all major vehicle systems is required in this role.

Design, development, analysis, implementation, and validation of the complex instrument panel, console or instrument panel structure subsystems will be your day to day duties.

  • Perform engineering design evaluations and concept development across global vehicle programs

  • Utilize engineering tools and demonstrate CAE groups including Safety Performance to successfully develop the best system solution

  • Assessment of design to manufacturing processes (e.g. injection molding, vibration welding, vacuum forming, foam-in-place, wrapping) for instrument panels and consoles

  • Assessment of design to manufacturing processes used for IP Structures. Processes include steel & aluminum stamping and extrusion as well as robotic welding, magnesium die casting, and hybrid concepts.

  • Package components and collaborate with other systems within the vehicle (Thermal, Electrical, Body, Chassis, Restraints, etc.)

  • Work multi-functionally to support initial vehicle configuration work, realize cost optimization, deliver customer-driven requirements, and implement product and process improvements

  • Balance business imperatives, including but not limited to cost, mass, complexity, and timing

  • Communicate information to and from internal and external customer organizations (e.g. Creative Design, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Quality, suppliers) and lead the product development team (PDT)

  • Stay abreast of relevant new technology and driven products


Additional Description

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an accredited university
  • Comfortable working with multidisciplinary and cross-cultural teams
  • Ability to deal optimally with ambiguity and forward-thinking environment
  • Capacity to manage sophisticated projects, provide accurate time estimates, and allocate resources efficiently

Preferred Skills:

  • Prior DRE experience developing and executing technical solutions for mechanical components to support new vehicle programs
  • Experience with injection molding, skin forming, wrapping and similar interior component construction processes (IP and console)
  • Experience with steel, magnesium and/ or aluminum structures. (IP structures)
  • Experience applying the results of CAE analysis to structure design to optimize performance
  • Knowledge of tooling used in the construction of interior components
  • Experience with GD&T
  • Experience with DMFEA
  • Experience developing an SOR
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Blackbelt certification
  • Skilled in VIS Mock-Up / Teamcenter
