Lead Design Release Engineer-Radar and Sensing


Autonomous Vehicles require a complex system of Sensor and Computing Platforms, including dual redundancy, to meet performance and functional safety requirements. The Lead is responsible for leading the execution of sensing components including Radar, Ultrasonics Sensors, TACT (Touch and Collision) Sensors, and Exterior Microphones. Leads the execution through on-time builds, reviews, gates/milestones and issue closure. Mentors/Leads a team of DREs and lead cross-functional collaboration. Leads Integration of the sensors into the vehicle. Leads communication with Program Teams, SMT, and Cruise Leadership. Will directly affect the quality, durability, and performance of future autonomous driving vehicles manufactured by GM.


  • Lead the Execution and Integration of Autonomous Sensing
  • Provide direction and linkage to Sensor PDTs
  • Mentor DREs for Design Failure Mode and Effect Analyses (DFMEAs) and Peer-Reviews
  • Lead Production Readiness and Build Readiness milestone reviews
  • Lead and Support Plan for Every Part Reviews (PFEP)
  • Resolves highly complex technical and business issues (provides expert judgment and analysis)
  • Work to support manufacturing in root cause, build and launch
  • Work with service to ensure serviceability
  • Support Purchasing in sourcing
  • Assess impact to Sensing based on proposed program changes
  • Represent Sensing Status (Performance, Cost, Timing, Issues) to Management and various forums
  • Review validation results
  • Create and execute detailed Sensing timing plans aligned to Vehicle Program timing
  • Set priority and urgency for Engineering Work Orders, Problem Resolution, and Development / Validation Plans
  • Support Engineering Work Order (EWO) execution and track EWO status
  • Support Problem Resolution Tracking System (PRTS) and track PRTS status
  • Lay the framework for new Autonomous Sensing systems

Additional Description


  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science
  • Minimum of 8 years of DRE experience for complex systems
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex new components
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and assignments independently with a high accountability for results
  • Appropriate interpersonal skills and communication methods to work effectively with GM team and Cruise partners in San Francisco
  • Significant vehicle integration experience
  • Demonstrated Program management experience
  • Expert on engineering operations, processes, and best practices
  • Extensive understanding of Specification and Release terms and systems
  • Understanding of verification and validation processes
  • Proactive / results driven individual with high levels of initiative
  • High level of oral and written communication skills
  • High level analytical ability where problems are unusual and complex
  • High level understanding of engineering theory and principles of automated driving sensing
  • Design for Six Sigma Certification
  • The ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis

Desired Skills:

  • MS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science
  • Technical knowledge of Automated Driving Sensors
  • Experience in Design/Development of Safety Critical Systems/Components
  • Experience in automotive network protocols such as CAN and Ethernet
  • Knowledge of embedded software development process
  • DFSS Black Belt Certification
