North America Workplace Ergonomic Technical Lead


As the North American Workplace Ergonomic Technical lead, you have the exciting and highly rewarding responsibility of investigating sprain/strain injury trends across all General Motors North America (GMNA) operations and working with various functional teams to develop and execute key strategies which focus on the reduction of these sprain/strain injuries.  You will also be responsible for providing ergonomic process and technical insight to all GMNA site Joint Ergonomic Technical (JET) teams who are implementing the joint UAW-GM Ergonomic process.

We are looking for someone who can inspire, problem solve, create, and continuously improve the Ergonomics process in a dynamic and fast-paced environment with a focus on the reduction of sprain/strain injuries.

You will be collaborating with various functional teams within GMNA and other engineering disciplines, such as product design, material handling, manufacturing, as well as outside suppliers and UAW representatives, therefore strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential.  Other skills and attributes critical for this role include, strong analytic and problem-solving skills, growth mindset, strategic thinker, high integrity and empathy.

Here’s What You Will Do

  • This role will have an ergonomic technical focus by gathering relevant operations data to identify and investigate trends, process gaps, technical gaps, opportunities, and best practices. 
  • Based on data and business needs, drive and support the creation, development and execution of strategic ergonomic initiatives which drive targeted, high-impact, results.
  • Act as a single point of contact and provide UAW-GM Ergonomic process execution technical support to all General Motors North America (GMNA) operations.
  • Coordinate and lead regular communications and information sharing amongst North American Joint Ergonomic Technical (JET) teams
  • Lead the Safety Ergonomic UAW/GM Performance standard
  • Work collaboratively with Medical, Ergonomics, Industrial Engineering, and Safety teams to define the technical scope of work and standard activities and metrics of body mechanic coaches.
  • Jointly, and in collaboration with the Global Ergonomic Technical Specialist, support the development of Ergonomic training content and material.
  • Jointly, and in collaboration with the Global Ergonomic Technical Specialist, develop New Employee Ergonomic training content and material (for hourly employee’s).
  • Jointly, support the continuous improvement of the UAW/GM Ergonomic process.
  • Jointly, deliver all relevant USA Ergonomic training classes
  • Populate and maintain plant scorecards and develop action items
  • Maintain all salary JET standardized work and processes
  • Jointly, support the planning and potentially the delivery of the Ergonomic portion of the annual UAW/GM Health & Safety conference
  • Act as a support resource for UAW-GM Ergonomic negotiations
  • Assist in creating and attaining the annual Ergonomic Business Plan Deployment goals and objectives

Here’s What You Will Need

Required Qualifications  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Kinetics, Kinesiology, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Biomedical Engineering
  • 5 to 10 years’ experience working in manufacturing ergonomics, automotive manufacturing operations, or related area.  
  • Experience working with Unionized team members and partners.
  • Exceptional level of interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills; ability to interact with all levels of the organization. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships.
  • Results oriented
  • Focuses on and works towards planned targets, overcoming obstacles, setbacks, and uncertainty, and using appropriate processes. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple functional teams.
  • Ability to travel approximately 25% per month (travel will be planned in advance and flexible in nature).

Preferred Qualifications  

•             Advanced degree in Engineering, Human Kinetics, Kinesiology, Industrial Engineering or Systems Engineering. 

•             6+ Years of Experience in Ergonomics 

•             Certified Professional Ergonomist designation
