Orion Assembly Weld Engineer

Description

Scope

  • Responsible for activity at the department (body shop) level

General

  • Performs plant floor troubleshooting, training, problem solving, and root cause analysis for welding and joining processes.
  • Knowledge and experience with:
    • Resistance Spot Welding (steel and aluminum)
    • Projection Welding
    • Drawn Arc Welding and Brazing
    • Mechanical Joining (self-piercing rivets)
    • Sealer/Adhesive Dispensing processes
    • Laser Welding
    • Laser Brazing
    • Automated Robotic Manufacturing and associated controls systems
  • Develops and implements predictive and preventive maintenance activities
  • Responsible for managing change control for Welding, Dispensing, Mechanical Joining and Robot Systems.
  • Works with assigned personnel as required on current and future Body Shop assembly processes.
  • Reviews reports from destructive teardowns, in process weld monitoring checks, and maintenance process control sheets for corrective action requirements and compliance to Process Control Plans.  Develops and implements countermeasures as appropriate.
  • Maintains welding and joining review wall, which provides a weekly summary of the current welding and joining performance for the body shop.
  • Supports the plant with new welding, mechanical joining and dispense equipment design, verification, and buyoff.
  • Coordinates installation and validation of welding and dispense equipment.
  • Maintains documentation control of product and process engineering records (Weld Monitor Reports, Weld Data Sheets, Weld Tool Information Sheets, Dispense Data Sheets, eBOP assembly documentation, Gauge Records, Weld Destruct Reports and Engineering Standards).
  • Capable of engineering, implementing, and validating projects to upgrade or replace welding and joining equipment.
  • Performs metallurgical cross section preparation and analysis per General Motors engineering standards.

  • Executes safe work practices as the highest priority and achieves department objectives for ergonomics, health/safety, and housekeeping

  • Implements Quality Initiatives
  • Coordinates with Quality department when product changes which impact welding and joining process control.
  • Utilizes statistical methods and data analysis for continuous process improvement
  • Maintains awareness of quality standards, communicates department quality goals, and leverages resources to solve quality problems

People

  • Builds and maintains good working relationships with employees, both union and management
  • Executes safe work practices as the highest priority and achieves department objectives for ergonomics, health/safety, and housekeeping
  • Motivates, trains, and develops employees to effectively perform their jobs utilizing standardized methods
  • Communicates between shifts and departments to implement best practices, resolve problems and sustain consistent performance to objectives

Competitive

  • Reduces waste by identifying and improving value-added tasks and eliminating non-value-added tasks

Cost

  • Supports departmental objectives for continuous improvement in cost reduction, especially focused on scrap produced as a result of welding and joining processes

Basic Required

  • Must be able to work various shifts / rotate shifts, and weekends as required.
  • Thorough knowledge of manufacturing processes and tooling.
  • A high level of oral and written communication skills is required.
  • Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals required
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
  • Basic math and mechanical skills
  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills in job-related area
  • A high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel

Education and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree in Weld Engineering, Metallurgy or equivalent experience
  • Training in college level theoretical and applied mechanics, vibrations, fluid dynamics, physics, metallurgy, electricity, thermodynamics, heat transfer and manufacturing techniques
  • Training in computer and robotic applications
  • Previous automotive manufacturing experience desirable
